SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,467, dated December 27, 1904.

Be it known that I, KATHERINE TOJETTI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in combs, such as tuck or back and side combs, designed to be worn on the head, and pertains more especially to novel means for securely fastening the comb in the hair, so as to prevent the loss or loosening of the comb during its use.

The fastening device of my invention comprises a spring-pocket to be placed upon the lower ends of at least two teeth of the comb and span the space between said teeth, the said pocket being formed from a strip of spring-steel folded to form a rear member to engage the back of the teeth of the comb and a front member whose upper end is curved downwardly and then at its lower edge rearwardly to engage the teeth of the comb at the front side of the latter.

The fastening device of my invention is to be inserted through the hair to engage upon the teeth of the comb after the latter has been given its position, and when the said device is upon the comb it is concealed by the hair. The fastening device when in position confines all the strands of hair that may be between the two comb teeth engaged by said device, and hence said device will effectually prevent any accidental loss of the comb or any removal thereof until said device has been detached therefrom. When the fastening device is upon the teeth of the comb, the spring action of its members causes said device to effectually engage said teeth, and a feature of the structure of the device is that a force applied, as by the insertion of the end of the finger or thumb between the upper end of the front member of the device and the teeth of the comb, will result in the very convenient and ready detachment of the device from the comb. The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a comb with the fastening device of my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached front view of the fastening device, and Fig. 1 is an edge view of same with a portion of the comb represented by dotted lines.

In the drawings, 10 designates the comb, which may be of any usual or suitable form, construction, or material.

The fastening device of my invention is numbered as a whole 11 and comprises a rear member 12 and a front member 14, the latter having at its upper end the downwardlycurved portion or member 15, which at its lower portion is deflected rearwardly or toward the member 12, the extremity of the said member 15 forming a knife or reasonably-sharp binding edge 16 to engage the teeth of the comb. The fastening device 11 is formed of one integral strip of spring-steel folded at about its middle portion to form the members l2 14, the upper portion of the member 1e being then turned downwardly to create the member 15 and leaving the rear member 12 extended upwardly above the completed front member 14. The members 12 14: form between them a pocket of suflicient width to receive the lower ends of at least two teeth of the comb and to span the space between said teeth. The distance between the front and rear members of the device 11 will always be such that when the device is pushed upwardly upon the lower ends of the teeth of the comb the spring tension in said members will cause said teeth to be firmly held between the binding edge 16 and rear member 12, so that after the device has been applied to position it will firmly remain upon the comb until by the application of properly-directed force it is detached therefrom.

Pressure applied against the rear and front members 12 14, as by pressing the device between the thumb and finger, would have the effect of causing the device to more firmly attach itself to the comb; but due to the spring action of said members the device may be very readily removed from the comb, when, as above explained, a force is exerted between the teeth of the comb and the upper end of the member 14, tending to spread the upper portions of said members in a direction from each other, and this is a desirable feature of the device in that it aids in preventing the fastening device from mar-ring the teeth of the comb.

\Vhen it is del and comprising the front and rear members,

The comb, and the fastening device therefor to be detachably applied upon the lower ends of at least two teeth of the comb after the latter has been located in the hair, said device being formed of a strip of spring-steel and comprising the front and rear members, said front member having the downwardlyturned portion or member whose edge is deflected rearwardly to engage the teeth of the comb; substantially as set forth.
