UNITEDV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. HARDY, OF WAGO, TEXAS.
TROUSERS-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,579, dated .Tuly 1, 1902.
Application filed August 29, 1901. Serial No. 73,757. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at VWaco,
county of McLennan, and State of Texas, havev invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trousers-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to a new and useful improvement in trousers-guards for` bicycleriders, and has for' its object to provide a trousers-guard which will hold the leg`of the trousers rigid and not allow thesame to come in contact with the chain or other working parts of the bicycle, butwill at the same time preserve the shape ofthe trousers, and the guard will be entirely out of sight.
With these endsin view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the
- construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this speciication, in which-`v f Figure 1 is a perspective view showingmy' invention applied, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the guard by itself.
The guard is formed, as shown in Fig. 2, with an outside rim, which isheart shapein outline, and a circular portion A is formed within the heart-shape portion and connected to the same 'by the parallel portions B. This leaves a throat G connecting the circular portion A with the outside. rial of which the guard. is lma'de is spring metal, and when the guard is applied the circular portion is adapted to embrace the footv just above the ankle and is applied by forcing the guard upon the ankleby spreading the throat C, which will lspring open' far enough to allow the foot to enter through the same into the circular portion A, when it will again spring back in its normal position. The leg of the trousers isthen pulled down over the guard, and the outside rim D will keep the trousers at a slight distance from the foot, but will keep the trousers from coming in contact with the working parts of the bicycle because of the fact that the guard i the trousers.
The mate-y isv much longer from the frontto the rear than aeross'the same, and to keep the trousers from working up above the guard they are pinned to the guard by means of the safetypins E,Which are secured to the guard at different points and adapted to pass through For the purpose of adjusting the guard -to different-size trousers I make the vfront of the guard F adjustable. The
j ends of the body portion are slotted at G, `and upon one side a -pin I-I is secured in one end ofthe adjustable portion F and passes through this slot and has an enlarged head formed upon the same outside of the end of the body portion. A slot is also formed in thisr end of the adjustable portion F, and a pin I is secured within the end of the body and passes through this slot and is headed upon the inside. Thus the adjustable portion F can be pressed inward or pulled outward to a distance limited b v the length of lthe slot. Upon the opposite side instead of the pin a thumbscrew'J passes through the slot G, and when the adjustable portion F is once adjusted this thumb-screw is Atightened so as to hold the two parts vvof the guard rigidly together.
Y The advantage of my invention is that the guard will effectually keep `the trousers-leg in such'a position that it will not come in contact with the workingl parts of the bicycle, and it does notirdetract'from the appearance of the trousers-leg, as the guard is entirely out of sight, and thus it may be worn either on or off .the wheel and is quickly and easily removed or applied when desired.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the jexact construction here shown, as slight modifieations could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and useful is;
1. In a device of the character described, Va strip of spring metal bent to form the body portion, as shown and .described,a V- shaped frontportion, each-prong of; thev V-shaped portion adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the guard upon the ends of the body portion, and pins secured to the outside of the guard for the purpose of securing the trousers-leg to the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character described,
l spring metal, and means secured to the eX- terior rim for securing the trousers-leg to the I guard, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES H. HARDY.
