BASE-BOARD AND MOLDING BRUSH.

Be it known that I, HENRY H. BELKNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Board and Molding Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brushes and has for its object the provision of a brush peculiarly designed for cleaning the top edges of base-boards, wainscoting, picture moldings. or the like, whereby accumulations of dust may be removed therefrom expeditiously and easily without danger of soiling or otherwise damaging the wall paper or other adjacent surfaces.
It is with the above facts in view that I have designed the present invention, an important object of which is the provision of a brush having a shield which not only prevents actual contact of the brush bristles with the wall or paper but also extends beyond the ends of the brush to prevent the removed dustY from rising onto the wall or paper.
A further object is the provision of a brush of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture and durable in service.
IVith these objects and advantages in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral l designates the so-called back of the brush which comprises a plate, preferably of metal, bent at a right angle to provide a horizontal portion 2 and a vertical portion 3. A handle 4 of any suitable cross section and length is secured to the horizontal portion 2 in any desired manner as for instance by screws 5. A brush 6 formed of bristles or other suitable material is secured to the underside of the horizontal portion 2 in any desired manner. This would be a Specification of Letters Patent.

The ends 7 of the brush terminate short of the ends of the plate so that the ends of the plate will project therebeyond and serve as a shield for preventing dust removed by the brush from rising and settling on the wall above the base-board or molding being cleaned. The under surface 8 of the brush formed by the ends of the bristles is inclined from the lower edge of the vertical portion 3 to a point considerably lower at the opposite or forward side of the brush so that the various faces of a base-board top or molding' may be elfectualy engaged and brushed at the same time.
The use of the device is obvious but is also illustrated in Fig. 3 in contact with a wall A, and the top of a base-board. It will be seen that the vertical portion 3 is placed against the wall A with its edge upon the extreme top edge of the base-board. When the brush is moved along the top of the basoboard the various angular and curved surfaces will be engaged by the inclined lower surface 8 of the brush and eifectually cleaned without danger of damage to the wall A as nothing touches the wall but the smooth metal plate.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a brush for the specilied purpose which will be highly etlicientand rapid in use, and which is extremely simple in construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A brush of the character described, comprising a back formed of a plate having a flange extending at a right angle thereto along one edge, and a group of bristle tufts secured upon the underside of said back adjacent to said flange and extending in parallel relation to said flange, the width of said group of tufts being substantially the saine as the width of said back and flange and the ends of said back and flange extending beyond the ends of said group of tufts.
