RICHARD HALDENWANG, JR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed April 16, 1914. Serial No. 832,175.
To all whom 2'2. may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD HALDEN- WANG, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of liaw York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sanitary brush construction and particularly to that class in which the brush holding elements are removable from the frame.
The objects are to provide brushes, the bristle portions of which are capable of sterilization without detriment to the frame or back portion, which may be removed or replaced without the use of any tools or appliances whatever and without disturbing the others, and which are renewable when worn at a moderate expense. And finally, to provide a brush, parts of which may be dismounted so as to be carried flat in a case or pocket to avoid damage and save room in transportation. These objects are attained by the novel combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, the parts being disassociated. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a modification of construction.
35 Fig. 5 is a fragmental view illustrating another method of construction, and, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the preferred form of construction, the parts being enlarged.
The invention comprises a frame which 0 may be of tubular or other construction having a handle 10 connecting with parallel side members 11, joined at their outer ends by a bar 12.
Extending between the side members, at
5 the end of the brush portion, is a rigidly connected bar 1.3, forming with the side and front members a frame which may have attached any preferred form of backing, metal or otherwise, and which may be ornamented 0 as desired.
The brush holding elements are formed preferably of a tube or round rod having a plurality of openings 16 along one side, each opening containing a single brush tuft 5 or unit 17 of wires, bristles or other fibrous material held in place in the common manner; all of which elements are interchangeable, and one or more rows of which can be used at one time. Both ends of these elements are turned downward so as to stand nearly parallel but slightly bent toward each other, and flattened so that the front members 18 will engage within one of the vertical openings 19 formed on the outer surface of the end bar 12. The other member 20 is similarly fitted to suit the grooves 21 formed in the opposite outer surface. of the bar 13, the member being slightly bent inwardly forming a resilient hook that will remain in position when the knob is snapped into place over the bar.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, the front members of the brush holding elements 15 are reduced and formed into a pin like projection 25 suited to engage in vertical openings 26 formed in the front bar 12, the opposite end being shaped as before described.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the brush holding element 15 is reduced at one end 30 suited to be received in horizontal openings 31 formed in the front rail 12 while the opposite end is flattened and split forming two side members 31 and 32 normally sprung apart and which may be engaged in the slot 38 formed in the cross bar 13 so as to be held under spring tension therein when assembled.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a moderate force exerted upon any of the bristle holding elements will serve to free them from engagement with the main frame portion of the brush and it will be equally obvious that they can as readily be positioned without the necessity of manipulating screws, clamps or other engaging means. Thus these elements may be removed and subjected to sterilization by heat or chemical treatment and replaced without dificulty or the entire brush subjected to similar treatment; it will also be evident that duplicate brush holding elements may be inserted when desired and without the expense of discarding the complete brush.
It will be apparent that other modifications may be made from those indicated and that the method of construction shown is applicable to a wide range of brushes or similar articles.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A brush comprising a rigid frame having an open back, a bar extending from side to side therein at the rear of said frame, rods engaging with said frame and bar extending parallel with the sides, a plurality of brush tuft elements contained in said rods, and means combined with said rods whereby said elements are held perpendicularly to said frame.
2. A brush comprising a rigid, substantially rectangular frame having undercut spaced recesses in the end members thereof, brush tuft holders having ends resiliently engageable within the recesses in the end members of said frame, and means combined with said holders engageable with the mentioned recesses.
3. A brush comprising a rigid, substan tially rectangular frame having an open back and spaced openings formed in two of its oppositely disposed members said openings being angularly disposed, a plurality of solid brush holding elements, and resilient projections formed at an angle upon said elements adapted to removably engage in the mentioned spaced openings.
4. A brush comprising an'open frame, its end members having a plurality of angular recesses formed therein, solid, round, brush tuft holders disposed longitudinally of said 5. A' brush comprising a substantially rectangular open frame having front and rear members at the body portion thereof and a plurality of tuft holding elements, said elements all being held in tension between the said front and'rear members and removable therefrom by pressure applied on the side-opposite the tufts.
6. A brush comprising an open frame, a barv extending between the side members thereof, said bar and frame being recessed, tuft carrying elements each having a hook projection at one end and adownturned-projection terminating in a knob at the other end, all of said projection members. being resiliently-engageable in the mentioned recesses.
In witnesses whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
