To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. PEN- DERGAST, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

This invent-ion has for its object to provide a cheap and durable broom adapted to be detachably secured to a handle or holder, so that when the brush material of the broom is worn out the broom may be discarded and another applied in its place to the handle.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. trepresents a perspective view of one of the end portions of the broom. Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary sectional view showing a modification.

My improved broom includes a head composed of an inner member 12, which is preferably a bar of wood, and an outer member 13, formed as a casing to cover the sides and inner edge of the inner member, and preferably composed of sheet metal.

The brushing material of the broom is a layer 14 of fiber or filaments of any suitable flexible material, such as broom corn or bass fiber, the latter being an African product. The fibers are first laid across the inner edge of the inner member which is preferably rounded, and then bent across the sides of said member, their free ends projecting from the outer edge thereof as shown. The outer member 13 is then applied, it being formed internally to conform to the outer surfaces of the portions of the layer that are backed by the inner member 12. Fastening devices such as nails 15 are then driven through the edge portions of the outer member, the inner member and the intermediate portions of the layer 14, the

nails being clenched on one side of the outerv stops being preferably ears 16 which are integral with the outer member 13, and are bent inwardly from the side portions thereof and attached by nails 17 to the ends of the inner member. The stops may be otherwise provided, however, and may be the edges 16 of sheet metal pieces attached to the ends of the inner member, as shownby Fig. 5.

The broom thusconstructed is adapted to be detachably secured to a handle 18 having clamping jaws 19 adjustably secured to the handle by a bolt 20, the jaws bearing on the side portions of the outer member 13 which form. seats for said jaws. Spurs 21 are formed on the ends of the jaws 19, these spurs entering indentations forming sockets 22 (Fig. 3) in the sheet metal side portions of the outer member. The said indentations and spurs project into the layer of filaments between the inner and outer members 12 and 13, said layer forming a compressible backing so that the indentations and spurs may project inwardly to any extent required to cause a firm engagement between the jaws 19 and the outer member 13. When the nut 20 on the bolt 20 is loosened the jaws may be readily separated from the head and applied to another head.

The construction of the broom is simple and is of such nature that its parts may be conveniently assembled by blind persons, so that an added field of employment for those deprived of the sense of sight is provided by my invention.

I claim:

A broom comprising an inner head member, a layer of broom filaments bent over the back and extending across the sides of said inner member, the free ends of the filaments projecting from the outer edge of the inner member, an outer head member of sheet material formed to bear on the outer 1 surfaces of the portions of said layer which are backed by the inner member, and havhis a ing ears bent over the end portions of the FREDERICK W.
