BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,873, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed June 2, 1899. Serial No. 719,058. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WESLEY S. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the broom applied to use. Fig. 2 is a View showing a portion of the broom head and handle. Fig. 3 is a View showing a portion of the upper section of the handle. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the spring-plate. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section showing the spring-plate placed in proper position.
The present invention has relation to brooms; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The object of the present invention is to provide an elastic handle for brooms, said object being carried out by the construction hereinafter described.
The broom-handle proper consists of the sections 1 and 2, the section 1 being the upper one and 2 the lower one. To the lower section 2 is attached the broom-head 5 in an ordinary manner. The sections 1 and 2 are each provided at their adjacent ends with the slots 3 and at and into which slots the springplate 5 is placed, said broom-handle sections being connected together by means of the spring-plate and the rivets 6.
For the purpose of assisting in holding the spring-plate 5 in proper position said spring plate is provided with the notches 7, formed at the ends of the spring-plate, which notches fit over correspondingly-shaped portions 8 formed in the slots 3and 4. Another object of manufacturing the portions 8 is to prevent the weakening of the handle-sections.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement as pressure is brought upon the broom-head 3 and as said broom-head is passed over the floor or -carpet it will cause the connecting-plate 5 to bend, as illustrated in Fig. l, and when the pressure is removed the broom -head 3 will be brought into its normal position by the reaction of the spring, therebyproducing a broom that is easy of action, and by the bending of the broom-handle said broom-head will be brought into better position to remove the dirt from the floor or carpet.
Having fullydescribed myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A broom-handle formed in sections each of which is provided with a slot having a wedgeshaped projection 8 therein, said sections being connected by a spring-plate secured within said slots and provided With recesses or notches 7 that engage the projections 8, all arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WESLEY S. PALMER.
