UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM THOMAS BRAXTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE-BRUSH.
SPECIF1A$1QN forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,708, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed April 22, 1901. Serial No. 56,896. (No model.)
To a whmn it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM THOMAS BRAK- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Shoe- Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shoe-brushes, and has for its object the production of a brush which can be readily adapted to either the polishing of shoes to which a coating of blacking is applied or to the polishing of what are commonly known as tan shoes.
Finally, the object of the invention is the construction of a brush of the character described which possesses advantages in points of simplicity, efficiency, and durability and which will be comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in both views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved brush. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with a portion of the handle removed and one of the depending portions in sections.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of the brush,so curved in its formation as to form a suitable grip for the user. Formed integral with or secured to the ends of the handle are the depending portions 2. The brush portion of the device is formed with the common back 3, on one surface of which is secured the felt covering 4: for polishing tan shoes and on the other surface the ordinary bristles 5 for polishing shoes to which a coating of blackingis applied. To the common back3,at the ends of its longitudinal sides, are secured the springstrips 6 by means of the screws 7 or otherwise, said strips extending outwardly on a plane with the longitudinal sides of the back 3. The free ends of said spring-strips are bent inwardly so as to form thelugs 8, which are adapted to be sprung in the recesses 9 in the sides of the depending portions 2,and thereby hold the brush intact with its handle for use.
The operation of the device will be clearly understood from the foregoing description, it being only necessary to release the springstrips from engagement with the recesses in the depending portions of the handle and reverse the exposed polishing-surface of the brush and then spring the same in engagement with the depending portions of the handle again.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shoe-brush,ahandle, depending portions on the ends of the handle, a brush between the depending portions, spring-strips secured to the longitudinal edges of the brush said strips having their outer ends bent in Wardly so as to fit in recesses formed in the edges of the depending portions substantially as described.
2. Inashoe-brush,ahandle,dependingportions on the ends of thehandle, a reversible brush between the depending portions, and means for securing the brush to the depending portions of the handle whereby either surface may be exposed for use.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM THOMAS BRAXTON.
