UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD TANNER HEWLETT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
CLOTHES-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,148, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed February 25, 1897. I Serial No. 624,957. (No model.) I
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD TANNER HEW- LETI, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, in the county of MiddleseX, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Brushes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to brushes for cleaning clothes; and the object thereof is to provide a brush of this class with an attachment for removing mud and other dirt from clothing after it has become caked or dried'thereon.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side View of a brush provided with my.improvement; Fig. a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a cross-section of the attachnient.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide any suitable brush 5, to the back of which is secured a block 6, said block being secured to the brush by screws 7 or in any desired manner.
The block 6 is convex longitudinally and in cross-section, and in the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I form in the bottom of the block 6 a longitudinal chamber 8, and I pass around the body portion of the block, longitudinally thereof, a wire or wires 9, and the said wire or Wires are also wrapped around the body portion of the block transver'selythereof, as shown at 10, and the ends of the wires are secured beneath the block or in the longitudinal chamber 8, formed in the center thereof, as shown at 11 in Fig. 3.
By means of the wires 9 and 10 I provide a corrugated or roughened surface for the block 6, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
Whenever it is desired to remove dried mud or other dirt from clothing, the attachment is rubbed thereover, the corrugated surface formed by the wires 9 and 10 operating to plish the result for which it is intended, and
it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a clothes-brush, the same being provided with a block 6 which is secured thereto by screws, said block being provided with a longitudinal chamber 8, and wires 9 and 10, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of February, 1897.
RICHARD TANNER HEWLETT.
Witnesses:
EDWIN PEACE, FREDERICK JOHN BENNE T.
