BROOM ATTACHMENT.
APILIGATION FILED SEPT. 7, 1912.

ARNOLD LEIGHTON, OF MILIBRIDGE, MAINE.
BROOM ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 7, 1912, Serial No. 719,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD LEIGHTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Milbridge, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to broom covers, and has special reference to a cover which is so placed upon a broom as to extend evenly with the lower face thereof, and so as to form an efficient means for preventing the straws of the broom from spreading when in use.
Another object of this invention is the production of a broom cover formed from a blank provided with means whereby the same may be adjustably secured to different size brooms.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fullydescribeda-nilliclaimed.
the accompanying drawing :Figure l is a perspective view of the" improved broom cover showing the same attached to a broom. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a blank view of the cover.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, it will be seen that the device consists of-- a body portion 1 which is formed of a blank sheet of felt or other suitable material. The edges 2 and 3 of the body 1 are so formed as to converge toward the u per sideso as to allow the cover to be snug y secured upon the body of the broom. Near the edge 2 of the cover is pro vided a plurality of vertically extending apertures 4: which are so formed as to be in such a position as to allow a securing means to be passed therethrough to secure the two edges together by the securing means passing through the vertically extending apertures 55.- The body 1 is provided With a plurality of vertically extending apertures as shownat 6 and 7 whereby the edge of the body may be out off and in this manner allow the cover to be placed upon a broom of a very small size. A plurality of longitudinally extending apertures 8 are formed in the body portion 1 on both sides of the central portion whereby after the cover has been placed upon the body of the broom, the apertures will so register as to allow a securing means to be passed therethrough for securely holding the same upon the broom. The securing means. used in combination with the cover and broom is preferably a plurality of strings or cords 9 which are passed through the apertures and tied upon the outer face of the cover.
It will be seen that the lower edge 10 of the body portion 1 extends evenly with the bottom portion of the broom after the cover has been placed thereon. By this means the straws are held in a correct position and 'it, will be impossible for the same to spread when the broom is in use. When this device is used, the straws of the broom will brush up thelarge particles of dirt, while the edge 10 will dust the floor, and will, in

this manner, form a device which will .do
away with the polishing of the floor after the same has been swept.
The central portion of the cover is provided with a plurality of vertically extending parallel apertures 11 whereby the cover may be secured to the broom providing the central portion becomes worn out.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is 4 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a broom, a cover therefor, said cover positioned upon the lower, portion of said broom, the lower edge ofsaid cover extending evenly with the lower portion of said broom whereby to form a means for preventing the straws of the broom from spreading and also for forming a secondary polishing means, said cover provided upon its outer edges with a plurality of vertically extending parallel apertures for adjustably securing the device. upon different size brooms, and securing means passing through said apertures for holding the cover uponv verging edges whereby to allow the body to. conform to the shape of the broom, said body provided with a plurality of vertically extending parallel apertures near its outer passing through said apertures for holding edges whereby the cover may be adjustably the cover upon the broom. 10. secured to different size brooms, said cover In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my provided with a plurality of longitudinally signature in presence of two witnesses,
5 extending openings on both sides of the cen- ARNOLD LEIGHTON.
tral portion thereof, said openings so I Witnesses: formed as to register when the cover is HENRY H. GRAY,
placed upon the broom,.and securing means LILLIAN E. SMALL.
