UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
WILLIAM H. DAVIDS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POLISHING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. DAVIDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for polishing shoes, and its object is to provide a novel and improved holder for a polishing strip of flannel, woolen cloth or other fabric, said holder being constructed so that the strip may be readily removed for renewal when worn, and the strip being held so that it will yield to the shape of the shoe.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder with the strip of polishing fabric attached thereto, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the holder comprises a bowed resilient strip 5 which may be formed of wood or metal, and has secured to each end a cross strip 6, the inner face of which is grooved as indicated at 7, said grooves forming seats to receive the ends of the bowed strip. Suitable securing means 8 driven through the bowed strip and the cross strips fasten said parts together. The cross strips are wider than the bowed strip so as to form a wide bearing or supporting surface for the polishing cloth 9, which latter may be a strip of flannel, woolen, or other suitable fabric.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. January 24, 1913.
Patented Feb. 10,1914.
Serial No. 743,984.
The polishing cloth 9 is secured to the holder by being fastened at its ends to the cross strips 6 so as to extend between the same, withthe strip 5 bowed outward from the cloth and holding the latter taut. The cloth is attached to the cross strips by passing its ends beneath the same and over to the top, the ends of the cloth being ripped in two and'tied in a knot 10 beneath the strip 5. The cloth is thus easily applied, and by untying the knots, it can be readily removed from the holder.
By the holder herein described, the 'polishing cloth is left free to yield to the shape of the shoe when pressed thereagainst, but it resumes its tautness when the pressure is released.
I claim:
A polishing device comprising a bowed resilient strip, cross strips having grooved inner edges to receive the ends of the resilient strip, fasteners passing through the cross strips and the ends of the resilient strip resting in the grooves thereof, and a polishing strip extending between the cross strips and removably secured thereto at its ends.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
