JOHN D. SWANTON, OF NEW IBEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE-CLEANING GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1915.
Application filed August 12, 1914. Serial No. 856,432.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN D. SwAN'roN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Bedford, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Cleaning Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to protecting devices for shoes whereby the sole extension may be covered during the operation of polishing the shoe so that the stitching in the extension will not be soiled.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a shoe for a device embodying the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the vamp of a shoe and 11 the sole extension having the usual stitching 12. In order to protect the stitching from the shoe polish and thus avoid soiling the finish on the sole extension I provide a guard which is to be applied to the shoe. This guard, as shown in the drawings, comprises two curved members 13 and 1% having enlarged overlapped ends which are pivoted together at 15 and form a generally U-shaped structure. From Fig. 2 it will be seen that the inner edges of the members 13 and let are so shaped as to conform to the shape of the shoe and by pivoting the members 13 and 14. together the guard is made adjustable for shoes of different sizes. The enlarged ends of the members 13 and 14 form a small tab or handle by means of which the guard may be held in position and applied to or removed from the shoe.
The guard may be used on either a right or left shoe by having one side upward for one shoe and reversing for the other. In using the guard it is held in position by one hand of the operative while with the other hand the polishing or other work is done.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is,
1. A device for protecting the sole extension of shoes, comprising two curved members having enlarged overlapped ends and a pivotal connection therebetween, said members forming a reversible U-shaped structure and being relatively adjustable to fit different sizes of shoes.
2. A device for protecting the sole extension of shoes, comprising two curved members of flat material pivoted together at one end, said members forming a reversible U- shaped structure arranged for use on a right or left shoe and being adjustable to fit different sizes of shoes.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. SWANTON.
