UPPER-PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,811, dated August 16, 1881.

To all whom "at may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE W. GLAZIER and ANTHONY R. S. TAYTE, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at Salem,

in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upper-Protectors for Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in upper-protectors for boots and shoes, for the purpose of preventing boot and shoe uppers from being soiled, injured, or defaced during the process of manufacturin g boots and shoes.

Upper-protectors for this purpose have heretofore been made of cloth in pocket form and united to the upper by basting or sewing, remaining on the upper until removed when the boots and shoes are being packed and ready for the market.

To prevent loss of time in putting on and removing upper-protectors for this purpose, we carry out our invention as follows:

It consists of a piece of cloth or other suitable material folded so as to lap over the inside and outside of the upper. To the inner side of this folded cover is attached, preferably by sewing, a number of bent metallic springs, such springs being each provided on the side that is to be in contact with the lining of the upper with projecting hooks or teeth pointing slightly upward, so that the said springs may easily be pushed down over the upper so as to em brace it and remain in position with the cover attached thereto, and so as not to be detached from the upper in its manipulation during the manufacture of the boots and shoes, the little hooked projections serving to hold the springs and cover firmly in place. To remove the cover it is only needful to expand the springs far enough so as to relieve their teeth from contact with the lining, when the protector can easily be withdrawn, and for this purpose we prefer to make one end of the spring a little longer than the other, so that it can be taken hold of with ease by the operator.

This invention is equally useful for slippers as well as for boots and shoes of various styles and sizes.

On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved protector as applied to the upper of a boot or shoe. Fig. 2 represents a section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of one of the springs.

Similar letters. refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

a represents the upper of a boot or shoe, on which a is the inside lining, as usual.

I) is the folded cover projecting over the inside and outside of the upper when in use as and for the purpose set forth.

0 represents the metallic springs attached to the inside fold of the cover I), as described, and provided with upward-projecting teeth or points 0, adapted to hold onto the lining a of the upper by the elasticity of the springs when in use for the purpose set forth. One end, 0, of each spring is made longer than theother end, 0', as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which serves as a handleto expand the spring when the protector is to be removed.

If so desired, the relative positions of the springs and cover may be reversed.

What we desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, an upper-protector for boots and shoes, consisting of the folded cover I), with its bent metallic springs 0, adapted to embrace the upper in a manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the folded cover b, its springs 0, having teeth or projections c, as and for the purpose described.
