Be it known that 1, JOHN E. SEAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at N oblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Shaking- Sieves, of which the following is a speoification. 1 p

The object of; my said invention is to pro- .duce an efficient cleaning and agitating device for that class of sieves (composed generally of two sifting'fabrics stretched upon a frame) such as are used. in shaking-sifters, especially those having a horizontal gyratory motion.

Said invention consists in the combination, with the sieve, of a loose cleaner mounted between the two sifting fabrics and composed, generally speaking, of a base, a fibrous and somewhat elastic sweeping material secured to the upper side of said base, and a hard smooth (preferably metallic) bearing-plate secured to the under side of said base, said cleaner being adapted to move over the surfaces of the sifting fabrics and free them from adhering material, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a top or plan view of the two ends of a sieve of the character with which my improved cleaner is designed'to be employed, the central portion (including several sections, according to the length of the sieve) being broken away, and portions of the upper sifting fabric'being also broken away, showing thatbelow, with one of my improved cleaners shown in each section; Fig. 2, a sectional View, on an enlarged scale, as seen from the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a top or plan view of one of my improved cleaners, substantially full size; Fig. 4, a sectional View of the same on the dotted line at 4 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 an under side plan View thereof. The sieve in itself is not peculiar to my present invention, but will. be briefly described to indicate its character. It is composed of asuitable frame 1, having intermediate cross -bars 2, dividing it substantially into squares,with a comparatively coarse sifting fabric 3 over its lower side (which fabric is generally composed of wire-cloth) and a fine sifting fabric 4 stretched over its upper side;(which fabric is generally composed of silk'cloth'.) It will be understood,of course,

that the meshes especially of this latter are very much exaggerated in the drawings with lines as fine as the meshes of silk cloth, and the meshes of the wire-cloth 3 are also some- .what exaggerated. The cross-bars 2,by which the sieve is' divided into sections or squares, are preferably rounded somewhat onthe upper side, as shown in Fig. 2, and the rounding sides covered with some soft material o,

such as strips" of cotton flannel, to prevent preferably secured to the base 6 by small tacks or screws 8, and shoes or bearing-plates 9, which are preferably cut from thin sheet metal with the ends driven up through the base 6 and clenched over, as best shown in Fig. 4. In order to give a proper distance between the surface of the sieve fabric on which the cleaner rests and the base, I prefer to interpose a thin piece 10 of some material, such as Wood, by which this result is accomplished.

, I have discovered by practical experiment that these cleaners, while light and very inexpensive, have the faculty in operation of traversing the entire space within which they 'are confined and by their combined jarring and sweeping action to keep the sieve fabrics entirely free from adhering material.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a sieve composed of a frame and a sieve fabric secured on both its upper and its lower side, of a cleaner mounted loosely between said fabrics to slide on one and brush against the other, said cleaner being composed of a leather base 6, the wool sweep 7, and the metal bearing-plate or shoe 9, substantially as set forth.
