SAYFORD L. PENDERGRASS, OF MONROE, GEORGIA.
DUSTER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
.Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed July 3, 1905. Serial No. 268,169.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD L. FENDER- GRAss, a citizen of the United States of erica, residing at Monroe, in the county of Walton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dusters, of which the following is a specication.
My invention has relation to improvements in dusters and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dusting-brush embodying the invention. Fie. 2 is a detail sectional view taken centra ly through the lower enlarged portion of the handle, showing the manner of connecting the brush-forming material therewith. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a length of the fabric employed in the construction of the duster. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the duster, showing the strands grouped and tied together.
Referrinr to the drawings, l designates the brush-handle, provided with an enlarged terminal portion or head 2, having a continuous marginal recess 6, there being secured to the head 2 a dusting-body or brush member 3, composed of a strip or ribbon of pliable woven fabric presenting a fringed portion or section 3 and an integral upper edge band 4, constituting a marignal attaching-strip formed continuous throughout the entire length of the fringed section 3.
In producing the device a strip of woven fabric of suitable width is raveled or otherwise suitably treated to form the fringed portion 3', the threads of which lie in closelyjuxtaposed relation, it being understood that the revolution or other treatment of the fabric in the formation of the threaded portion is continued until a selvage 4 of suitable width is produced, preferably of a width equaling that of the recess 6. The strands of the fringed body portion are grouped or bunched, as shown in Fig. 4, the strands of each group being tied or knotted, as shown at 7, to prevent said strands from tan ling when the implement is in use. The fabric after being With the threads or fringes 3 projecting below or beyond the head 2, thus presenting a soft highly-pliable dusting portion designed to act upon the articles to be dusted. The material having been wrapped on the handle in the manner explained is finally secured in place through the medium of tacks or other fastening members 5, driven at suitable intervals through all of the layers of the material and preferably in two rows around the recessed portion of the head 2. It will be observed that under this construction there is provided a simplified form of duster in the production of which the handles of the various forms of brushes now in general use may be employed, thus permitting of the utilization of discarded handles with a consequent reduction in the cost of producin the brushes, and, furthermore, that the uster when completed will present an extremely soft and pliable dusting portion which in use will not injure the most delicate articles which it may be desired to dust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A duster comprising a handle havin an enlar ed head provided with amargina recess tlierein, a strip of fabric having its body portion slitted transversely to form a continuous longitudinal lfringe portion, said strip being also provided with an intact marginal band which is wound around said head within said recess, means for securing said band to said recess, the strands of said fringe portion being grouped together and tied in bunches, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SANFORD L. PENDERGRASS.
