NATHANIEL EMMONS IPAINE, OF WEST NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913..
Application filed January 20, 1912. Serial No. 872,886.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL EMMoNs PAINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Newton, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth -Brushes, of which the following is a full and clear description.
The object of this invention is the construction of a tooth cleansing, polishing de vice which shall be capable of thoroughly performing this task and of removing all accumulations from between the teeth, and which can be manufactured at so low a cost as to warrant its being thrown away after one or two employments.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tooth brush embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the removable cleansing part alone. Fig. 3 is a side sectional view of the latter. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the handle alone. Fig. 5 is a side view. of the handle,
The handle 1 of this article is, as illus trated in Figs. 51: and 5, preferably somewhat thin and longitudinally curved, with a hole 2 at one end by means of which to suspend the same from any suitable hook or other device. The curvature is designed to keep the brush portion from contact with the wall or other surface against which the same is suspended.
The brush portion consists of a fabric pocket 3 having a pile 4 woven thereon alon one surface, the pocket being designed for t e reception of the end 5 of said handle; the pocket being retained thereon by impaling its fibers upon the stud 6. This fabric pocket is preferably woven from silk, cotton or linen thread, and its pile is formed and cut in the usual manner, except that the wires over which the pile is formed are of different vertical dimensions in order to produce the serrated arrangement shown. For more readily doing this, I prefer to slit the terminal portion of the pocket, as at 7, and to separately impale the flaps 9 upon said stud, either forcing the latter between the fibers of the fabric, or providing the same with small holes punched therein. The pile 4 is formed of unequal heights in order to give it a ribbed or serrated contour, and thereby enable the same better to reach between the teeth and into the other inter stices thereof and so more thoroughly cleanse the mouth. The fibrous material employed in the weaving of said pocket and pile should be of a comparatively resistant and inflexible nature in order better to perform the function of a brush.
After the teeth have been thoroughly cleansed through the agency of the serrated pile the surface of the teeth may be given a final polish by rubbing them with the back 10 of the fabric pocket.
After one or more uses, the fabric may be pulled off and thrown away or destroyed.
What I claim as my invention and for which I desire Letters Patent is as follows, to wit A tooth cleansing device comprising a handle, formed with a flattened end and a narrowed neck, and a fabric woven in the form of a pocket fitting -said flattened end and having a pile upon one side thereof, the outer or open end of said pocket being slit to enable said end to be tightened about said neck by overlap ing the edges of the slit, and means for I 4 edges in place, whereby said pocket is el in place on said handle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of December, 1911.
