E. c.` MIDGLEY GLARE SCREEN aljgjgay e. 1924 Patented Mar. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES ERNEST C. MIDGLEY,
PATENT OFFICE'.
0F UNION, NEW YORK.
GLAR'E SCREEN.
Application filed Ia'y 8, 1924. Serial No. 711,805.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that ERNEST C. MIDGLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county of Broome and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glare Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a glare screen adapted to be attached to the wind shield of automobiles to shield the eyes of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through one of the vacuum cups hereinafter described and:
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through one of said vacuum cupsfthe same being shown partly in elevationf'? Like numerals designate correspondingy garts throughout the several figures of the rawmg.
In the drawing Adesignates the uppe section of a conventional windshield. The glare screen proper consists of a web which may be wire gauze. loosely woven textile fabric or other semi-transparent material. At each end of the web 5 there is provided a loop or bail 6, one leg of which passes through the end of the web and the other leg of which passes through a channel 7 formed in a boss 8, of a vertically elongated. .vacuum cup 9. A rib 10 lying vertically of the cup constitutes a handle or grip whereby it may be grasped and forced into contact with the inner face of the glass of the wind shield.
The device of the invention is so simple in construction and so easily applied that the driver finds no difficulty in readily putting it in place for use when driving at nightvand, if desired, removing it during the day, though it may be left in place if desired.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction setl forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A glare screen comprising an elongated web of fiexible and foraminous fabric, an elastic vacuum cup at each end thereof, said vacuum cups being substantially triangular in transverse cross-section and being elon-v gated in the direction of the width of the web of fabric, elongated ribs extending along the inner sides of the vacuum cups said ribs having openings formed therethrough from end to end, looped portions formed at the ends of the fabric and wire loops which extend through the looped portions of the faband-through the openings of theq said r1 s.
2. A glare screen comprising an elongated web of flexible and foraminous fabric, an elastievacuum cup at each end thereof. said v vacuum cups being substantially triangular in transverse cross-section and being elongated inthe direction of the width of the web and each having an elongated rib along the apex of the triangle, elongated ribs lying along the inner sides of the said vacuum cups and substantially equal in length to the width .of the forammous fabric and wire loops having portions which extend entirely through the last named ribs and through loopedportions formed at theends of the foraminous fabric.
In testimony whereof he aiixes his signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, ERNEST C. MIDGLEY. Witnesses:
