NOSING FOR STAIR TREADS.
Serial No. 496,094.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS 0F THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT FRooD, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Chapel-en-le- Frith, in the county of Derby, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nosings for Stair Treads (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain Sept. 17, 1919, Number 22,810), of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to stair nosings of the kind which when worn along one edge can be reversed to bring the other edge into position for use, and more particularly to suoli nosings used with non-slipping and other treads which are attached to the stair steps. The invention has for its object to provide an improved reversible nosing which can be readily fitted, and will have a longer life, than nosings at present in use.
According to this invention, a reversible nosing is formed along its longitudinal edges with thickened wearing portions connected by a thinner portion which can be readily moulded or shaped to extend, orl bent, around the nose of the stair step with one of the thickened portions in position for use and the other lying below the nose of the step. When one thickened portion of such a nosing is worn the nosing can be reversed to bring the other into use, when the worn portion is concealed below the nose of the step.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a fragmentary perspective view of one form of nosing in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a like view showing the nosing fitted to a stair step. Figs. 3 and 1l are similar views to Figs. l and 2, respectively, illustrating another form of nosing in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the nosing 2 comprises thickened wearing portions 3, 3 connected by a thinner web portion et. The latter is moulded or shaped to extend, or is adapted to be bent, around the nose of the stair step 5 with one of the thickened portions alongside the front edge of a nonslipp-ing or other tread 6 attached to the step, and the other thickened portion lying below the nose of the step. The nosing may be secured by nails or other appropriate means which will allow of its reversal when the thickened portion in use has been worn down, to bring the other into use. When the nosing has been reversed the worn portion lying below the nose of the step does not present an unsightly appearance.
The nosing may be made of india-rubber or like material, or of woven or unwoven organic and/or inorganic libres or iibrous materials bonded by or treated with a suitable cementitious substance, such as e. g. india rubber, a phenolic resin, bitumen or an appropriate gum or gums.
When the nosing is made of a woven fabric, the thickened wearing portions 3, 3 may be formed during weaving, or by attaching separate pieces along the longitudnal edges by stitching or otherwise appropriately, or by making the woven fabric suiiiciently wide and doubling or folding it along the longitudinal edges and stitching or other- Wise suitably securing the doubled or folded parts.
If desired, there may be incorporated in the nosing a reinforcement, such as e. g., a perforated metal plate, a woven wire fabric or a fabric of intercoiled wire spirals.
In some cases, as shown in Figs. 3 and l, the nosing 2a may also be formed of thfckened covering portions 3a which are connected by a comparatively thinner portion 4a and provided with thin marginal extensions a along the thickened wearing portions Sa, 3a so `that by the insertion of the upper marginal extension of the upper or operative part of the nosing below the front edge of the stair tread 6a, such part of the nosing and the front edge of the tread may be secured by one set of fasteners. The marginal extension of the other or lower part of the nosing may be folded therebehind out of sight.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A reversible nosing` for stair treads comprising a member having comparatively thick wearing portions adapted when applied to a tread to lie along the upper and lower faces of the tread and connected by a iiexible comparatively thin portion.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HERBERT FROOD.
