MAT. a
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted June 21, 1910.
Application filed August 16, 1909. Serial No. 512,991.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVARISTE BoUoHARn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Provi dence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and usefulI'mprovements in Mats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mats or rugs and has for its essential objects, the sheddingof dirt and water, simplicity and cheapness of construction; durability, and adaptabilityto ornamentation.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construct-ion and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mat embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an enlarged plan view of a corner of the'same, Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of a corner of the mat, Fig. 4: an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion of the mat, and Fig. 5, a perspective View of one of the constituent strips.
Like reference letters indicate like parts throughoutthe views.
The mat A is composed of interwoven strips, B. In detail each strip, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 5 is formed from an oblong piece whose side margins are folded together so that one margin overlaps the other margin, and a resulting longitudinal joint 6 is formed at the center of the strip B.
i The oblong piece has a textile base C, upon which is a coating of enamel D. When folded the enamel coating is upon the exterior of the strip. The resulting strip or strand B is comparatively soft and flexible, while theenamel exterior assists in preventing the penetration of water or the adhesion of dust and dirt. The strips B are arranged longitudinally of the mat with the joints b upon the under side, while strips B, which are identical in construction 'with'the-strips B, are arranged transversely of the mat with their lapped joint or edges 6 also upon the under side. In order to fix the strips B and B in their interwoven position a marginal" seam F is sewed through the strips.
What I claim is,--
A mat comprising a plurality of sections 7 of water-proof material, each section comprising a striptfolded upon itself to form a flat strand, the weft and warp threads being all of water-proof materialand the strands EVARI STE BOUCHARD.
