Description

(No Model.) 7
E. DILLINGHAM.
5 Broom.
No. 236,418. Patented Ja,n.'11,1s s1.
Z 711467160 r Edward FFICEQ EDWARD DILLINGHAM, OF CHELSEA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HOMAN E. REED, OF NEEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,418, dated January 11, 1881.
Application filed November 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DILLINGHAM, of Chelsea, of the county of Sufl'olk and State of 'Massachusetts, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is an edge view of a broom pro- IO vided with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the uppermost third of its handle.
In carrying out my improvement I make the broom-handle in two separate parts or sections and join them by an elastic connection I 5 or spring, the same, while the broom may be in use, being to impart to the hand having hold of the upper part or section of the handle a yielding pressure of the handle, and thus render it less fatiguing, comparatively speak- 2o ing, to the person using the broom.
In the drawings, A represents the broom having its handle in the two separate sections or parts a b, the upper having a length about one-third of that of the lower section, or that 2 5 part carrying the broom-stick cl. The two sections a a, are connected by a stiff plate-sprin g,
c, which extends lengthwise into both of them,
and is fastened to them by rivets e. The two sections are arranged a short distance apart,
and have between them and around the spring 0 an elastic washer, g, which fills the space between them, such space being necesssary to enable the upper section to be moved relatively to the lower one.
In using the broom, a person with one hand 5 grasps the upper section of the handle, while with his other hand he has hold of the lower section. In sweeping, the pressure of the handle on the upper hand will be a yielding one, whereby working the broom becomes less fa- 4c tiguing than would be the case were the handle in one entire and stiff piece as usually made.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, viz: 4 5
1. A broom having its handle in two sections, a b, connected by a spring, '0, all being substantially as described.
2. A broom having its handle in two sections, (1, b, and connected by a spring, 0, and 50 having between the sections and around the spring an elastic washer, g, all being substantially as set forth.
E. DILLINGEIAM.
