Description
T. G. JOHNSON.
MOP.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.6, 1915.
1,176,992; Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
E I/zeadare 6-? Johnson,
Sum Mom:
Application filed August 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE G. JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to, improvements in mops, and the present invention is an improvement over the mop disclosed in my copending application bearing Serial No. 767,583, and filed May 14, 1913.
The present invention relates more particularly to the construction and cooperation of the bail and the mop-head, whereby the latter is held flat against the surface of a floor or wall by the former and is prevented from tipping upward at its forward end when drawn backward over such surface.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a front elevation partly in section, of the device.
- In carrying out the invention, I provide a mop-head 1, consisting of one piece of wire bent, preferably, in triangular form and provided intermediate its front and rear ends with upwardly extending loops 2, converging toward their front sides, as disclosed by Fig. 1. i
8 designates a pivot extending through the loops 2 and provided at one end with a head 4, and at its opposite end with a nut 5 to secure it from longitudinal displacement.
6 designates a bail made, preferably, of one piece of wire bent at its central portion into a rearwardly-extending shank 7 and terminating at its forward ends in loops 8, operably mounted upon the pivot 3 and bearing against the converging sides of the loops 2.
The rear portion of the shank 7 extends transversely through an opening in a handle Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Serial No. 43,929.
9, and the sides of said shank are further secured to the handle by a tightly fitting ring 10, which firmly holds the sides of the shank in grooves 11 in the sides of said handle 9.
In practice, when the mop is pushed back and forth over the surface of a floor any tendency of the forward end of the mop head 1 to tip upward on the back stroke causes the converging sides of the loops 2 to rotate against the adjacent loops 8 and force the same toward each other, as indicated by the dotted lines Fig. 1, against the resilient action of the bail 6. The resistance thus offered by the loops and the bail holds the mop flatly upon the surface of the floor and prevents its forward end from tipping upward on the back stroke, as would be the case if no resistance were offered to such tipping movement.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have produced a mop well adapted for the purpose intended, and while I have shown my preferred form of mop it is understood that such changes may be made in the construction, proportion, and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination, a mop-head having upwardly-extending loops intermediate its ends, a pivot extending through said loops, and a resilient bail having upwardly-extending looped ends rotatably and slidably mounted upon said pivot and bearing at an angle against the mop-head loops to compress said bail and resist upward tipping of the front end of the mop-head.
2. In combination, a mop-head having upwardly-extending and forwardly-converging loops intermediate its ends, a pivot extending through said loops, a resilient bail having upwardly-extending looped ends rotatably and slidably mounted upon said pivot and bearing against the mop-head loops, and a handle secured to said bail.
3. In combination, a mop-head made from one piece of wire and having upwardly-extending and forwardly-converging loops intermediate its ends, a pivot extending through said loops, a resilient bail made of 5 one piece of wire bent at its rear portion into a shank and at its forward ends into loops which rotatably and slidably engage the mop-head loops and are operably- -mounted upon the pivot, and a handle secured to the shank of said bail.
In testimony whereof I ,afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
