PATENT BROOM ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,069, dated July 6, 1886.
Application filed J une 2, 1885. Serial No. 167,404. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WALTER ELLIOTT NASH, of Darlington, in the county of Lafayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Broom Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more particularly relates to brooms used for sweeping floors, and other household purposes; and it consists in a detachable broom-like-shaped guard, the same being made flaring toward its front end, to conform to or approximate the spread or fanlike shape of the opposite sides or faces of the broom or broomhead, and with its side edges, from its back to its front end, turned up to fit and clasp both side edges of the broom, also provided at its back end with a central tubular handle, open throughout its length, to admit of the guard being slipped over the handle of the broom, and serving to cause the guard to bear against and support the side of the broom below or beyond the bound portion of its splints. When fitted to the broom-head and its handle, as described, this broom-shaped-like guard operates to give to the broom a comparatively rigid action on its one side or face, without restricting the elasticity of it on its opposite side or face, thus by simply turning the broom about varying its sweeping capacity or action, which will be found very convenient. Furthermore, said guard, when removed from the broom and its handle, constitutes a very serviceable dust-pan for gathering the sweepings brushed up by the broom, and which, by being carried by or combinedwith the broom, as described, will always be ready for use as a dustpan by the person using the broom, and the two articlesviz., broom and dust-panconvenient for use, as required, also, when combined, serving to protect from injury each the other.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal view, looking toward its edge side, of a broom with attached handle in part, and having the combined guard and dust-pan applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, upon a smaller scale, looking toward a face or flat side of the broom; and Fig. 3 is-a front face view of the combined broom-guard and dust-pan detached.
A indicates an ordinary house-broom or broom-head with attached handle B.
G is the combined broom-guard and dustpan, of broom-like shape in its general configuration, being made flaring toward its front end and rounded at its back or upper endthat is, as viewed from its face or back. It is made of metal, and has its side edges, from its back to its front end, turned up, as at b, to fit and clamp both side edges of the broom. Its tubular handle 0, which is open at both ends, is of a size to admit of its being readily slipped over the handle of the broom when fit ting the guard to its place on the broom, and is at such an angle in relation with the bottom of the article as will cause its bottom or back to bear against and snpport the one face or side of the broom, and to extend below or beyond the lowest tied or bound part, .9, of its splints. Thus applied, the guard G will serve to stiffen the broom on its one side or face, so that when sweeping with the opposite side or face in front the broom will have a comparatively rigid sweeping action, which will be useful when rough or hard sweeping is required; but by turning the broom about, so as to sweep from its other side or face, then it will have its usual free or elastic action for lighter sweeping. This will be found very convenient, and after sweeping with the broom, or at any time, the guard 0 may be slipped from off the broom, and its handle and be used as a dust-pan to gather up' the sweepings, &c. It, in fact, as combined with the broom, will be a dust-pan always ready for use in connection with the broom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. The within-described combined broomguard and dust-pan O, of tapering or flaring broom-like-shaped construction, with its edges 1) turned up on its one side or face, and provided with a tubular handle, 0, open at its optied or bound portions of its fiber, and to supposite ends and throughout its length, subport the broom on its one side or face and 0p- [0 stantially as shown and described. posite edges, essentially as and for the pur- 2.
