UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR J'. KNAPP, OF MARQUETTE, IOWA.
Application filed February 16, 1922. Serial No. 536,932.
To all whom t may con-cern Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. KNArr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marquette, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brooms and more particularly to the means for securing the cleaning element to the handle.
The invention resides in broader aspects in the provision of means whereby the cleans ing element may be readily and conveniently renewed, thereby dispensing with the necessity of throwing away the handle.
Further the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the cleaning element may be securely and positively clamped in position so that the accidental loss of the same is prevented.
A further object is to provide a broom ofA the character speciiied which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of the improved broom. y
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the same. In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 generally designates a head which as illustrated in Figure 2 is hollow and is provided with a transverse partition 6 at a point spaced from its upper and lower ends. As further illustrated in Figure 2 a socket member 8 is extended through the. rear end of the head 5 and is engaged with the rear side of the partition 6 and the socket member is adapted for the reception of the forward portion of the handle 10 which in accordance with the invention may be used continuously. The forward portion of the handle 10 is atly engaged with the partition 6 and is held in position by means of a screw 11 threaded through the partition and into the forward portion of the handle. When it is desired to remove the handle it is only necessary to first remove the cleaning element 12 and then remove the screw 11 so that the handle may be withdrawn.
The head 5 to which the cleaning element is connected has its rear end curved or rounded while the forward portion of the head is provided with spaced sides 14 and 15 the side 15 being hingedly connected to the head as indicated at 16. The sides 14; and 15 are provided at their ends with overlapping flanges which engage the edges of the cleaning element and thereby prevent the cleaning element from spreading. Also the sides 14 and 15 are provided with inwardly extending anchoring devices which may be of any suitable type and by means of which the cleaning element is securely held within the casing.
The edge portions of the stationary side 14 are provided with longitudinally curved holding arms 22 hingedly supported as: in dicated at 23 and adapted for extending over the hinged side 15 whereby to hold the same in position. The hinged side 15 is provided with a threaded stud 24: with which winged nuts 25 are engaged so as to hold the arms 22 in position.
In the manufacture of the cleaning element, the several straws of the same may be pinched together and a piece of reinforcing wire 28 may be imbedded in the cleaning element. Also the cleaning element may be extended into a quantity of glue so that the several straws will be securely held together'. I-Iowever the improved cleaning element may be made in any desired manner without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A broom comprising a hollow head having relatively stationary and movable sides, the movable side being hingedly supported, locking arms carried by the relatively stationary side and overlapping the hinged side, threaded studs carried by said hinged side, winged nuts threaded on said studs and engaging said arms whereby to hold the same in position, a cleaning element extended into said head and engaged by said sides, a partition extended through said head, a socket member extending through the rear end of said head and flatly contacting with said partition, a broom handle In testimony whereof, I have afxed my extended into said socket member and flatly signature 1n the presence of two Witnesses. engaging Sald'partitlon, and a screw eX- tending through said partition and extended y ARTHUR J' KNAPP' 5 longitudinally into the forward end of said Witnesses:
handle whereby to anchor the handle in po- FRANK A. SAWVELL,
