SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,374, dated January 24, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER TEEPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Cleaners; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a chimney cleaner, and particularly to that class for cleaning lamp chimneys wherein spring arms are used.

The object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap, durable, and convenient device than has heretofore been in use.

l/Vith this object in view, myinvention consists in the peculiarities of construction and combinations of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

The accompanying drawing illustrates a plan View of my device.

The reference letter a represents the handle of my device, provided at its lower or rear end with a ring b, by which it may be hung upon a hook if so desired. Fitted and countersunk in the forward endv of the handle are wires c, d, and e, the middle or wire cl being doubled and made much longer than the others. The outer ends of ythe double wire d, are bent or ooncaved to form a waste receptacle f, the eXtreme ends meeting beyond the receptacle. Placed upon the Wire and between the receptacle and handle, is a clamp ring g. When using my device the waste or other suitable material is placed in the receptacle, and the clamp ring g is pushed toward it, thus drawing the wires together and securing the waste cloth therein. The side arms or wires c and e are provided near the handle with oppositely twisted portions 7L, which tend to throw the forward ends of the arms away from the center or wire d. The eX- treme ends of the wires c and e are provided with twisted portions z', the ends k being bent backward, and formed in the shape of hooks r Z, which engage the wires c and e. Grasping loops or catches are thus formed on the ends of the wires, and in which can be secured waste clothvor other suitable material. A ferrule 'm is placed over the forward endof the handle to prevent its splitting.

When using my cleaner the ringgis slipped back to allow the free ends of thewires to open and waste cloth placed in the receptaclef. The ring is then pushed forward,and in this manner the waste is securely held in the receptacle. The hooks @are released from the wires c and e, and Waste cloth placed therein, and the hooks are then again fastened on the wires c and e. The waste cloth is thus securely held in place, and when it is desired to clean 'a lamp chimney, the side wires or arms are pushed together, and the three wires c, d, e forced into the interior of the chimney. After entering the chimney, the ends of the side wires spread away from each other and are held in engagement with the interior wall of the chimney by the resiliency of the twisted portions h. The center or wire d readily cleans the top of the chimney, owing to its length. The handle can now be revolved or pushed forward and backward, as the operator desires, until the interior of the chimney is perfectly clean.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a lamp chimney cleaner, side arms or wires having coils near their base, coils upon the outer ends of the wires, the extreme ends of said wires being bent back and ,provided with a hook for engaging the main wire, whereby the cleaning material maybe securelyheld on the same, substantially as described.

2. In a lamp chimney cleaner, side arms or wires having coils near their base, coils upon the outer ends of the wires, the extreme endsA of said wires being bent back and provided with a hook for engaging the main wire, whereby the cleaning material may be securelyheld on the same, a longer central arm consisting of two wires having curved portions near their outer ends, and a slip ring on the wires for drawing the same nearer together, substantially as described.
