Description

C. P. PALMER.
LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
Patented March 6,1877
NFEI'ERS. FHDTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGYON. D. (I.
UNITED STATES PATENT DEEIoE CHARLES P. PALMER, OF WEST CONCORD, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT'IN LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,069, dated March 6, 1877; application filed December 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OHAELEs P. PALMER, of West Concord, in the county of Essex, and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of parts of my improved lamp'chimney cleaner detached.
. Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in implements for cleaning lamp-chimneys, as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawings, A is a suitably-shaped wooden handle, in which is secured a metallic rod, B. The upper end of this is made square, as shown at a, and below the square part is a screw-threaded portion, 12. A lip or clamp, G, the under side of which is roughened or serrated, is secured to the upper end of rod B, and a similarly-shaped lip or clamp, D, slides upon the square section a of rod B. The upper side of clamp D is serrated like the under side of clamp O, which it faces, and to 1ts under side is secured a small plate, d, having projections or arms 0 c. E is a metallic sleeve,
' having an interior screw-thread, by which it operates upon the screw-threaded portion of rod B. This sleeve has at its upper end a flange, t, which presses against the under slde of clamp'D. The arms 0 c of plate d clutch the sleeve below the flange, and thus secure the clamp D and sleeve E together, while the -latter at the same time is capable of being freely revolved.
ney cleaner is as follows The sleeve E is turned so as to bring it down upon rod B, thus carrying with it the clamp D, which is attached to it, as already described. Suitable soft material, such as'a rag or a piece of raw cotton, is now placed between the clamps G 'l), which then, by operating sleeve E, are brought together again, thus clasping the material placed between them and holding it tightly.
The implement may now be used for cleaning lamp-chimneys in the usual manner. The clamps O D, of course, need only be very small, and the rod B being quite slender, the implement may be used for cleaning even the smallest lamp-chimneys. When the material placed between the clamps O D becomes dirty or worn it may easily be removed, and new material substituted, in the mariner already described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The improved implement for cleaning lampchimneys, herein described, consisting of rod B, having square part a and screw-threaded section b, clamp O secured to rod B, clamp D, and screw-threaded sleeve E, having flange t', for operating clamp D by means of the plate d, having arms 0 attached thereto, all combined and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES P. PALMER.
