To all whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that I, Svvnn Lesson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northwood, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of lamp-chimney cleaners which are provided With rotatively-mounted brushes; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive construction which shall be adapted for cleaning chimneys of different sizes and forms, and one wherein the' brush is made removable, so as to be capable of being detached and used in connection with an ordinary handle.

lThe invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts of the improved lamp-chimney cleaner, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In order that my invention may be the better understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a lamp-chimney cleaner embodying my improvements, in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective View showing the device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the device and showing the means for operating the spring clamping-jaws employed for holding the chimney in place While it is being cleaned. Fig. 3 is an end View showing the construction of the adjustable support for the end of the chimney. Adjacent to the standard 2 is mount-ed an upwardly-extending plate or post- 7, through which the shaft 3 passes, and on the side of said plate or post 7, adjacent to the brush G, is mounted an expansible clamping-ring S, set concentrically with the shaft 3 and provided With arms 9, adapted to clamp the base of the lamp-chimney, so as to hold the same securely in place While being cleaned.

The clamping-ring 8 is formed, asshown in the drawings, of a single piece of Wire, and the arms 9 are formed of loops bent in said Wire. The lower portion of the ring 8 is secured to the surface of the plate or post 7 by means of suitable clips 10, and the ends of the Wire of which said ring is formed are carried up over the upper edge of the plate or post 7 and bent down behind the same, as indicated at l2, the extremities of the Wire being carried down on opposite sides of the shaft 3 and being secured to the base-plate 1. The downwardly-bent extremities of the Wire are bent toward each other just above the shaft 3, as shown at 13 in Fig. 2, and on said bent portions is arranged to'slide a loop 14:, having a handle 15, by means of which it may be slid along the bent portion 16 of the wire, so as to draw the extremities. of the wire together and cause the clamping-ring S to close and bind against the base of a lamp-chimney and also to open and release the chimney, the open portion of the expansible clamping-ring being located directly opposite the point of attachment, so that the sides of the ring expand and contract equally.

The base-plate l is provided With parallel guideways 16, extending along its opposite sides, in which guideways are arranged to slide blocks 17, whereon is pivoted a brace or support 18 for the end of the chimney. The brace or support, Which is disposed transversely of the base, is constructed of a single piece of Wire and consists of substantially vertical sides and a U -shaped loop connecting the upper terminals of the sides and arranged IOO between the same. When not in use, the brace is adapted to be folded down fiat against the base-plate, so as to be out of the Way.

In using the device constructed as above described the lamp-chimney is placed upon the brush 6 with its base portion inside the jaWs or arms 9 of the clamping-ring 8, after which the handle 15 is manipulated to slide the loop 14E along the bent portions 13 of the wire, so as to clamp the base portion of the chimney securely in place. The neck of the chimney is supported by the pivoted brace 18. The crank 4 is then operated to rotate the brush 6 inside the chimney, and so clean the same.

In order to enable the brush 6 to be employed for other purposes, I have shownv it detachably connected to the end of the shaft 3, so that when desired it may be removed therefrom, and in connection With the device constructed as above described I prefer to employ a handle 19, as shown in Fig-.4, and having a screw-threaded end portion to engage the socket in the enlargement 5 of the brush. The brush when detached and fitted with the handle 19 may be employed for various purposes-such, for example, as cleaning bottles and jars.

From the above description it will be seen that the invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive construction and is especially Well adapted forthe purposes for which it is designed, and it will also be evident that the device is capable of some modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not. Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the parts herein set forth.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, yI claim- 1. A lamp-chimney cleaner comprising a base provided with a post or support, a rotary brush, and an expansible ring secured to the post or support, arranged concentric with the shaft of the brush and adapted to engage a lamp-chimney and hold the same stationary, substantially as described.

2. A lamp-chimney cleaner comprising a base having a post or support, a rotary brush, the expansible clamping-rin g open at one side and secured to the post or support at a point diametrically opposite such opening, said ring being constructed of a single piece of resilient material and provided with fingers disposed longitudinally of the brush, and means for opening and closing the expansible ring, substantially as described.

3. In alamp-chimney cleaner, the combination of a base-plate, a rotatively-mounted brush, and a folding brace mounted adjustably on the base-plate and adapted to support the chimney While being cleaned, substantially as set forth.

In alamp-chimney cleaner, thecombination of a base-plate provided with parallel longitudinal guideways, a rotary brush, blocks arranged to slide in said guideways, and a Ytransverse brace mounted on said blocks and consisting of the substantially vertical sides and the U-shaped loop connecting the upper ends of the sides and arranged between the same, substantially as described.

5. In alamp-chimney cleaner, the combination of a base-plate, a rotatively-mounted brush, a clamping-ring formed of Wire and provided With arms to hold the chimney While being cleaned, the ends of the wire of Which the ring is formed being bent toward each other, and a loop arranged to slide on said ends of the Wire to draw the same together, and force the arms into clamping engagement with the chimney, substantially as set forth.
