CULINARY `IlVlOl.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 6, 1916.
Application led November 18, 1915. Serial No. 62,216.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AseURY H. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States of Amerprovision of a ready means for attaching.
the scrubbing portion of a culinary mop'to -the handle thereof, the device being constructed of but few parts and being efficient in its use for cleaning dishes, lamp chimneys and other household articles.
A further object of the device is the provision of a mop handle having a resilient binder for securing the scrubbing member thereto, the resiliency ofthe binder assisting in retaining the same in its operative position upon the handle.
It is herein designed to provide a culinary mop formed in three separable parts being a resilient binder for attaching a scrubbing member to a handle and so arranged that the scrubbing member may be readily detached and a new one quickly supplied in operative position for use.
With these general objects in view and i others that will appear as the nature of the tol invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional'4 view through the handle partially broken away and with the scrubbing member removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the scrubbing member in position and shown in section, and Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the central attaching portion of the scrubbing member.
The embodiment of the device as herein illustrated broadly consists of a scrubbing member 10- attached to a handle 11 by means of a resilient binder 12. The handle 11 is provided with a cut away portion 13 at one centrally thereof.
end thereo-f formed by severing the said end of the handle substantially upon the axis thereof and thus providinga flat mount# ing surface upon the end portion 15 remaining which portion is substantially semi-circular in cross section. At the inner end of the cut away portion 13 a shoulder 16 is formed by so severing the handle, which shoulder is arranged perpendicular to the aforementioned face 14. A longitudinally extending socket 17 is formed in the handle opening at the shoulder 16 while the freeend of the handle portion 15 is providedI with a slot 18 and a similar socket 19 is arranged eX- tending longitudinally inward centrally of the handle portion 15 and opening within the slot 18.
The scrubbing member 10 may be formed in any desired manner but preferably as herein illustrated and consisting of apluralit-y of flexible strands 20 such as soft cordage and arranged in a small bundle or bale having a transversely arranged centrally disposed securing tape 21 secured thereto and encircling the same and forming a central comparatively firm narrow attaching portion.
The scrubbing member 10 is adapted to be positioned transversely mounted upon the receiving face 14 of the handle an'd resting upon the tape 21. vThe resilient binder 12 preferably formed of heavy and only slightly pliable wire is adapted to overlie the scrubbing member tape 21 substantially The binder 12 has one overturned or hooked end 22 arranged parallel with the main portion of the binder, the latter being operatively applied by flatly engaging the tape 21` when positioned as above set forth and simultaneously inserting the hooked end 22 within the socket 19 and the free end of the binder 12 within the socket 17 and -slidably moving the binder relatively of the handle into seating engage ment within the said sockets and overlying the scrubbing member as best illustrated in Fig'.l 4. In applying` the binder 12 the free end'th'ereof is first inserted a slight distance within the socket 17 and the binder bent over the scrubbing member 10, the relative lengths of the binder 12 and its hook 22 being such as to allow the said hook to enter the slot 18 when the free end of the binder is so engaged while thereafter a longitudinal movement of the binder seats the hook 22 and the free end of the binder within their respective sockets 19 and 17. It will be seen that in so applying the binder 12 the said binder will be slightly bent outwardly at the central portion thereof by reason of its engagement with the scrubbing member and this placing of the binder under tension effects a firm locking of the scrubbing member in its operative position upon the handle face 14 as well as assisting in retaining the binder 12 in engagement with the sockets 17and 19 during all ordinary operations of the mop. It has been found to be extremely diiiicult to remove or shift the scrubbing member 10 transversely of the handle when so locked in position thereon although a longitudinal movement ofthe binder 12 for releasing the scrubbing memberl may be readily effected whenever desired and the scrubbing member 10 replaced by a new or clean member.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that' minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. A mop comprising a handle having a side cut awayportion at one end thereof forming an inner shoulder and a supporting face perpendicularly arranged with respect to the said shoulder, a bail-form of scrubbing member having a contracted transverse central portion positioned upon the said supporting face, the said handle being provided with a socket therein opening at the said shoulder, and being further provided with a transverse slot at its free endhaving an inwardly extending socket opening into the said slot7 and a resilient binder overlying` said scrubbing member and having one end removably positioned within the said shoulder socket and its other end provided with a hook extending through the said slot and inwardly of the said socket adjacent the said slot.
2. A mop comprising a handle having an intermediately arranged longitudinal socket and also provided with a terminal slot and a terminal longitudinal socket opening into the said slot, a scrubbing member positioned in contact with the said handle, a resilient binder having a terminal hook and adapted to overlie the said scrubbing member and the free end of the said binder positionable within the said intermediate socket prior to its admission within the said termina` socket during the binding operation.
In testimony whereof l afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
