To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broom holding devices.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive, strong and efficient holder for brushes, brooms and other similar articles, which will be adapted to automatically grasp and hold them, subject to immediate release, when desired, upon the handle of such an article being placed The present invention particularly seeks to provide a device of the character set forth of few and simple parts, possessing lightness as well as strength, owing to the novel manner of association thereof, as will more fully appear hereinafter, the novel features of the invention being recited in the appended claim.

The body of the holder is made of a single piece of sheet metal l, or, this body may be cast in a single piece. The body has a trough 2 in which the handle of the article to be held, such as a brush, broom or the like, is positioned, and to afford easy insertion of the article in said trough, one side thereof is provided with inclined flanges 3.

Ihe opposite side of the holder has an elongated slot 4 and the holder is provided with a vertically disposed extension 5, which is provided with a notch 6. Pivoted on a suitable pivot, such as the rivet 7, attached to the extension 5, is a gripping jaw 8 which has a toothed edge 9 disposed eccentrically to the said pivot 7 and adapted to play in the slot 4 and to overhang the trough 2.

The outer end of the gripping jaw is provided with an integral lug 10 adapted to play in the notch 6 and, by its engagement with the end walls of said notch, limit the play of the gripping jaw. The gripping jaw is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal of sufficient strength, and by reason of its guidance in the slot 4, it is braced and strengthened and hence, together with the holder and the extension,
-may be made of comparatively light material.
The handle of the brush, broom or other article, may be readily inserted in the trough by giving said handle a general inward and upward motion which raises the toothed edge of the gripping jaw. When the user releases the handle from his grasp, the weight of the brush, broom or other article, causes the handle to be firmly grasped by the toothed edge of the gripping jaw and retained in the trough. To release the article, it is lifted slightly and removed outwardly from the trough.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a broom holder, the combination with a holder made in a single piece composed of a trough shaped member opening outwardly to receive the handle of a broom and adapted to be directly fastened to a support, said trough having a slot in its side, and a flat extension extending outwardly from the side of the trough and disposed away from the base of the trough, of a flat gripping jaw pivoted to the inner face of the said eX- tension and lying and operating in a plane parallel and close to the said extension with its free part playing in and guided by the slot and provided with a cam adapted to engage the broom.
