' COMBINATION, UTENSIL.
Specification of Iiette'rs Patent. Patented Sept. 2 1 1920 Application filed October 27, 1919. Serial No. 333,819.
Be it known that I, WILLnmI Din'rznma citlzen of the United States, residing at 'Merrick, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Utensils, of which the following is a speci ficationg This invention relates to combination uten- 'sils, and hasfor its maimobject the; provibe interlocked mutually to provide a single unit brush or broom. I
Although I have mentioned my device as useful as a table brush and pan, I do not wish to limit myself to such use, as it may well be applied to a floor broom and dust pan by simply constructing the various parts of sufficient size.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings. I
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 represents my device in front elevation,
showing the same whenready for use as a.
brush.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same showing theparts in position for use as a combina-. tion brush and pan. v
-Fig. 3 is a partial rear View of the device of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the brush frame.
Fig. 5 is a lower view' of the same with a brushing means attached. v
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken substantiallyon the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings,-
the numeral 1 represents the handle of the device, and 2 represents a stamped rib therein to strengthen the same. A pan 3, constructed in the usual manner, is rigid to said handle at an inclination thereto, as isapparent in Fig. 2. Said pan has also a rib affords a convenlent cooperative 45 therein to strengthen the same. Theham dle 1 has a longitudinal slot 6 on each -side,
and is preferably of hollow construction. A bent wire rod 5, bent substantially in the form-of a closedU, has itsbridge in en gagement with said slots 6, and its ends in engagement with the brushmember 8. I The member 8 is for this purpose provided with a pressed out recess 7 so; as to provide a free strip 7 about-which the ends of said; rod 5 are bent so as to. secure the same thereto, and at thesame time to provide a pivot about which said brush 'member may be turned.
As aforementioned, the brush memberS is adapted to be folded, cooperatively with its handle 13, in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 into the closed or unitary position shown in Fig. 1. In order that the brush member may be securely retained when in the closed position, spring clips or catches 11 are stamped out of the same at 11, and these clips engage the edge of the pan 3 and securely hold thereon, thus preventing slipping of the brush member therefrom. l have illustrated one form of brush, although any convenient form may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
This form comprises a strip of cloth or felt 9 secured to the member 8 by weaving the same between teeth 10 stamped out alternately in opposite directions from the bottoinedge of themember 8. At the same time that the clips 11 engage the pan, the ,handle 13 ofthe brush member 8 passes as a single brush or broom, as in Fig. 1,
whence it acts as a single integral and rigid device, since its separate parts are all rigidly interlocked. When used as a combined brush and pan, as in Fig. 2, the member 13 is moved, in broom fashion, back and forth on its pivot, and the refuse is thus passed onto the pan 3. This combination device: which may readily be carried about as a single unit, and which makes impossiblethe separation of the brush from the pan, so
ready for service. 7 7
Having thus described my invention, what that the two are at alltimes at hand and I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 1 ent is as follows:
1. A combination brush and pan, and pivotal means connecting said brush With said pan, said means comprising a slot in said pan, said slot extending laterally through the handle of said pan, an eyelet o r hole 1n sald brush, and means engaging said eyelet 01' hole and slidably engaging said slot,
and means for rigidly binding said brush and pan in a single unit comprising resili ent clasps on said brush adapted to catch said pan. v
i 2. A combination brush and pan com-prising said brush and pan and means for pivotally connecting the same together, said means comprising a slot in the handle of said pan, said slot extending laterally through said handle, an eyelet or hole in said brush, a bent rod engaging said eyelet or hole and slidably engaging said'slot,
' and means for rigidly binding said brush and pan in a single unit comprising leSlllent clasps on said brush adapted to catch said pa z A combination brush and pan comprising said brush and pan and means for piv otally connecting-said brush and pan together, and means for rigidly binding said brush and pan in a single unit comprising vresilient clasps on said brush adapted to" catch said pan.
4. A combination brush and pan compris- 7 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. I
WILLIAM DIETZEL.
