HOLDER FOR LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,107, dated August 1, 1899.

To all], whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM RAYL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grappling or Holding Devices for Cleaning Lamp-Chimneys, &c. and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grappling and holding devices whereby a cloth or sponge or other article of convenient size may be grappled and securely held in a convenient manner, means being provided whereby the hand of the operator may hold a stationary and a sliding part of the device and open and close the clamping ends.

More specifically the invention consists of a stationary rack which is made of a single piece of wire bent upon itself, its middle portion forming a loop in which the thumb of the hand of the operator may engage, one end of such stationary part having a loop through which the sliding and grappling member works, said sliding portion being bent so as to form eyes which slide on the shank portion of the stationary part,aloop being formed in which the finger of the operator may engage for the purpose of opening and closing the grappling-jaws.

To these ends and to such others as themvention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of the parts, as will be more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the two views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved grappling or holding-device open, and Fig. 2 isa similar view showing the grapplingjaws closed.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the stationary part or frame on which the sliding member works and is made, preferably, of a single piece of wire which is bent at its middle portion to form the loop A, the shank portions of said wire being bent at right angles, as at B, and at one end of said wire is formed the loop 0, which is bent, preferably, at right angles to. the length of said shank portion carrying same, and at the'opposite end of said wire is formed a hook C, engaging over said loop, the two portions of said Wires being inwardly inclined at their ends, as shown. The grappling part of my invention consists of two wires E and F, which have angle ends, and the wire E, being bent at E, forming eyes which are adapted to work on the shank portions of the stationary part of the device. The two parts of said wire E after the loops E have been formed therein are passed through the loop C, and the wire F, the ends of which formapart of the grappling device, is bent upon itself at its middle portion, and the shank portions of said wires E and F are twisted together, as shown at H, and the ends of said wires which emerge from the twisted portion are slightly outwardly inclined, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and are disposed in a position in which they are in readiness to grapple the article to be engaged and held by said grappling ends.

In operation the thumb of the hand of the operator is designed to engage in the loop A and one of the fingers of the hand to engage in the loop formed in the wire E, and by drawing the latter-referred-to loop toward the loop engaged by the thumb of the operator the outer edges of the grappling-hooks, which are drawn through and against the walls of the loop at one end of the wire A will cause the hooked ends of the wires E and F to come together and grapple the article to be held thereby. When it is desired to release the grappling-hooks from the article, a

reverse movement is imparted to the sliding Wires E and F. After the spring ends of the wires E and F are released at the end of the wire A they will become distended, as will'be readily understood.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A device for grappling and holding a sponge or other material for I cleaning lampchimneys, comprising a stationary rack with loops at each end thereof, sliding grappling members working through one of said loops, and guided on the longitudinal sides of said rack as set forth. I

2. A device for grappling and holding material for cleaning lamp-chimneys, and for other purposes, comprising a stationary rack with loops at each end thereof, sliding grappling members Working through one of said loops, eyes formed out of the shank portion of said grappling members, and guided on the longitudinal portion of said rack, combined as set forth.

3. A device for grappling and holding articles for cleaning lamp-chimneys, and other purposes, comprising a rack made of a single piece of wire, having a loop formed at its middle portion, and a loop at one end of said wire, which is engaged by a hook formed at the other end of the wire, combined with a sliding grappling member working through one of said loops, and having eyes working on the longitudinal sides of the rack as set forth.

In a device of the character described, the combination with the stationary rack of a grappling member made up of a Wire bent at its middle portion to form a loop, thence bent to form eyes designed to engage with and slide upon the longitudinal sides of said rack, and a second wire having hooked ends, the shank portions of said wires being twisted together and working through the loop at the ends of the wire forming the rack, as set forth. I

In combination with the rack having a loop at one end the longitudinal sides of said rackinwardly inclined and terminating in a loop, sliding grappling-jaws made up of a single piece of Wire bent at the middle portion to form a loop, thence bent to form eyes, which slide on the inwardly-inclined sides of said rack,the shank portions of said grapplinghooks passing through and designed to be contracted by the loop at the contracted end of said rack, and to be held in a grappling relation, as the said eyes are forced up the inclined sides of the rack, as set forth.
