NAPKIN-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK DAHLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Esmond, in the county of Benson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved clip especially designed as a napkin holder for suspending a napkin in front of the wearer such as is commonly used with children to prevent soiling of their clothes.

The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efficient device of this character provided with means for detachably engaging the article from which it is to be suspended without injury thereto and having a spring clip for engaging the napkin to be held.

Another object is to provide means for covering the clothes engaging means when not in use.

'VVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation showing this improved device applied, the napkin and garment with which the device is connected being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing this device in inoperative position; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation with the hook covering member in open position; and, Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

In the embodiment illustrated a holder is shown comprising a metal plate 1 provided at one end with transversely spaced longitudinally extending slits 2 and 3 to form a central tongue 4 having a projection 5 ar ranged at the free end thereof for a purpose to be described. The arms 6 and 7 formed by the slits 2 and 3 on opposite sides of the tongue 4 extend beyond said tongue and have their ends bent to form bearings for a pintle 8 on which a cover member 9 is pivotally mounted between the bearings on the end of the arms 6 and 7. her is preferably formed of a metal strip having one end thereof bent into hook like form and the extremity of said end bent inwardly to form a sleeve like bearing 10 for the pintle 8-. This sleeve 10 is provided on its inner face intermediately of its ends with a notch 11 with which the end 5 of the tongue at is adapted to engage when the member 9 is in closed position to hold itagainst accidental opening. The long end 12 of this member 9 is provided on its inner face with a longitudinally extending groove 13 which is adapted to fit over and engage the pin hook 14 now to be described. This hook 1 1 is secured to the inner face of the tongue t with its pointed end extending in a plane parallel to the tongue and spaced therefrom and which is adapted to engage the clothing for holding the device in oper ative position on the garment of the user or wherever else it is desired to be used. The other end of the plate 1 is provided with a napkin engaging clip 15 which is of ordinary construction and comprises two spring pressed jaws 16 and 17 one of which is stationary and is formed by an offset extension of the plate 1 and is provided on opposite sides with laterally extending apertured flanges as 18 through which a pintle 19 extends and through similar flanges 20 formed on the jaw 16 which is movable relatively to the jaw 17 and is held normally in closed position by means of a spring 21 coiled on the pintle 19 and having rearwardly extending ends 22 and 23 one of which engages the front face of the plate 1 and the other the inner face of the jaw 16 at the rear of the pintle. It will be obvious that by depressing the rearward extension of the jaw 16 the gripping portion thereof will be moved away from the corresponding gripping portion of the jaw 17 and permit the insertion of the napkin or other article to be clamped therebetween.

In the use of this device the cover member 9, which is normally closed over the pin hook 1 1- to prevent the point thereof from coming in contact with surrounding objects, is moved backward into open position as shown in Fig. 1 the end 5 of the spring tongue 1 bearing against the sleeve 10 to hold the member 9 in open position. The hook 1 1 is then engaged with the object from which it is to be suspended and the clamping jaws are opened to receive the napkin or other article tobe gripped thereby.

Vhen the device is removed the pin hook l t is disengaged and the COVQl' member 9 is swung downwardly thereover and the end 5 of the tongue engages the notch 11 in the sleeve 10 and holds said member 9 yieldably in closed position whereby all danger of the hook lt penetrating adjacent objects is avoided.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. An article suspemling device having article engaging means at one end and a spring tongue at the other end thereof, an inturned pointed hook secured to the inner face of said tongue with the point thereof spaced late ally from said tongue and a pivotally mounted cover member for said hook provided with means for engagement by said tongue whereby it is held in open or closed position.

2. An article suspending device comprising a. metal plate having transversely spaced longitudinally extending slits formed in one end thereof to form a centrally disposed spring tongue with arms on opposite sides thereof extending longitudinally in the same plane, bearing members formed at the free end of said arms, a cover member pivotally mounted between said arms in position to be engaged by said tongue, an inturned needle pointed hook secured to the inner face of said tongue, said cover member having a groove on its inner face adapted to engage said hook and article engaging means formed on the other end of said plate.
