SAFETY DEVICE FOR JEWELRY.
Application filed September 21, 1923. Serial No. 664,016.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety Device for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide such a construction for the catch on a breastpin, brooch or similar article that the pin will not become accidentally disengaged therefrom, but which may be conveniently released from the catch whenever required.
The invention consists of the novel and useful construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that changes in form, size, proportion of parts and minor details may be made as found to be of advantage, said changes being within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side view of a bar pin with the device mounted thereon. Figs. 2 to 7, inclusive are views on an enlarged scale to clearly illustrate construction. Fig, 2 shows an end view of the bar, the pin being in transverse section, and the housing for the locking-plate being in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 shows an end portion of a bar and pin, and one of the sides of the device. Fig. 4: is a side view of the housing. Fig. 5 is a side view of the locking-plate. Fig. 6 is a view showing the reverse side of parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the looking-plate being drawn outwardly and the pin being shown in a released position.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, the invention is shown and described in connection with a bar-pin 8, and in order that it will not become accidentally detached or lost when attached to clothing, I provide a housing 9 having an opening 10 for receiving a locking-plate 11, said housing having a base 01: adapted to be soldered or otherwise secured to the bar -8 at or near one of the ends and transversely thereof, and being provided with a pair of opposed jaws a and b to provide a recess 0 for receiving the pin 12 when bent toward the bar, said pin 12. at one of its ends preferably being rigidly secured to the bar as indicated at 13, so that when released from the recess 0 it will, on account of its resiliency, move to the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1.
Numeral 14 indicates a coiled spring which is disposed in the hollow part 10 of the housing, one end of the spring abutting upon a wall 03 which projects from the base as of the hollow housing, the opposite end of the spring being in engagement with a projection cwhich is provided for the plate 11, said plate also being provided, opposite to its projection c, with a pair of prongs f and g, said spring normally tending to cause the plate 11 to slide inwardly of the housing, when moved outwardly, the prong g normally being maintained closely adjacent to the aw a of the housing.
In operation, the pin 12 may be placed in contact with the jaw a and the inclined wall it of the prong gof the plate 11, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, and may be conveniently pressed inwardly to the re cess c of the housing, said movement being against the force of the spring 14, but facilitated by the inclination of the wall it; and a release of the pin will be prevented by the prong To release the pin, a slidin movement of the plate is necessary, and the prong f, which projects outwardly of the opening 10 of the housing, operates as a holder or handle for effecting the manual, outwardly sliding movement of the plate.
In order that any rocking movement of the plate will be prevented, and that the plate may move without undue friction, certain hearings or guides for the plate are provided and now to be described. For this purpose a ledge 7c is provided which projects outwardly from the wall d of the housing, said ledge having a fiat contactwall m which is disposed approximately parallel with the inner wall a of the base m and parallel with the inner wall 79 of the prong b of the housing, said parallel walls m, n, and 32 operating as bearings, respectively, for the wall 1 of the plate which engages the wall 777., the wall 8 of the projection 6 which engages the wall a of the base cc, and the wall 25 of the plate which engages the wall 22 of the prong b.
It will thus be seen that when pressed inwardly toward the recess the pin will be in engagement with the prong a of the housing, and the inclined wall 71. of the slidable plate 11, said pressure causing a movement of the plate outwardly of the recess, and since the guides or walls 771, n and p of the housing are rectilinear and parallel this movement of the plate will be in a straight line. Also, by operation of the spring 14; the prong It will be pressed into'the recess 0 and will engage the pin, and thereby obviously preventing a movement of the pin outwardly of said recess. Since the prong f of the plate projects outwardly of the housing, the plate may be manually and conveniently moved by use of said prong. While I have shown and described a bar upon which the device may be mounted, any article or jewelry may, of course, be substituted which provides a support for the device, and for a mounting of the pin.
I claim as my invention,
l. The combination with a support and a pin mounted thereon, of a housing provided with parallel, rectilinear guides and secured to the support and having a recess for receiving the pin, a plate engaging said guides and provided with a projection and a second projection, resilient means'normally tending to more the plate inwardly of the recess to dispose its first named projection in engagement with the pin, said second prong providing a holder for moving said plate outwardly of the recess against the force of said resilient means to cause disengagement of the first .named prong from said pin.
2. The combination with a support and a pin mounted thereon, of a housing on the support having a recess for receiving the pin, a plate provided with a projection and disposed within the housing, a spring within the housing engaging the plate, said plate being movable in a straight line by force of the spring, its projection moving inwardly of the recess for preventing a movement of the pin outwardly of said recess.
