APPLlCATION FILED ,129.
end of the jaw 13 and forms with the jaw 12 an acute angle, preferably less than l15oA The free inner end 2l of this arm is'provided with teeth designed to engage in the cloth. The length of the arm from its pivotal connection to the teeth end has length materially greater than the shortest distancebetween the `iaws 12 and 13 and engages'the cloth at such an angle that any attempt to pull the cloth from the clip will merely result in pulling the arm more firmly i intol engagement with the cloth and thus press the same into engagement with the fixed jaw 12.
The lever includes a finger engaging extension 22 which projects outwardly fromI the body portion and is preferably angled to bring its lower end 23 outwardly from the jaw 13 as shown more particularly in Figure 2. I
Intermediate the arm 19 and the eXtension 22, the lever is formed into a flat spring bearing portion 24 which portion is engaged continuously by the end 25 of a U- shaped spring 26. This spring is fitted into the'body portion, as shown in Fig. 3, and extends through an opening 27 formed in the arm 19, as shown in Fig. 1.
The lower end 23 of the finger engaging extension is provided with an aperture 28 to which may be attached the article to be fastened, such as the watch chain 29, when the device is used as a fastening clamp.
The outer side of the arm 13 is free of projections and` provides a smooth finger engaging surfaceA 30 and the finger engaging extension 22 constitutes, in effect., a continuation of this lsurface so as to permit the operators finger to slide along the surface 30 and engage the extension 22 as shown more particularly'in Figure 3.v
ln mounting the device in position on the cloth, the arm 19 will act somewhat in the nature of a one-way clasp permitting the edge of the cloth to be inserted int-o position between the free edge of the movable jaw and the inner side of the fixed jaw. While it will be usual, especially where the tooth -ends 23 are used, for the operator to move the arm positively, into its inoperative position shown in Figure 3, it will be appreciated that this releasing of the movable jaw is not necessajy,` and the device can be forced into position over the edge of the cloth. During Athis action the movable jaw will act as a relatively broad guide for engaging the edge of the cloth. The spring acts continuously on the movable jaw thus avoiding any necessity for positively moving the spring into operative position. Should any attempt be made to pull the watch, or other object attached to the chain 29, from the pocket the chain will move into the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 and will thus tend to lift the linger extension 22, forcing the j aw more the operator engages the device between lbe thumb and first finger of one band and by pinching the extension 22 towards the fixed jaw, the movable arm is released Afrom its engagement with the cloth when moved into the position shown in Fig. 3, the device ran be readily withdrawn without danger of catching into any internal projections.
By means of a device of the character disclosed, it is possible to avoid any necessity for projections from either side of the U- body portion and the movable jaw can be disposed in inoperative position by a pressing or pinching movement of the operators fingers in distinction from the usual picking or pulling movement. The utilization of a long movable jaw extending at an angle with reference to the fixed liaw, and extending in the direction of insertion of the edgey of the cloth, tends to defeat any tendency for the aws to be sprung apart when an outward pull is exerted on the cloth.
The device can be readily formed from stamped parts and does not require any special machining in its construction.
While l have shown and described.y and have pointed out in the annexed claims, eertain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in ils operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from th(` spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim 1. A clip comprising a U-shaped member having its two legs spaced apart to receive a pocket edge therebetween` U-shaped lugs extending inwardly from opposite sides of' the lower end of one of the legs. and a lever received within and pivoted to said U-shaped lugs.
2. A cloth clip comprising a U-shaped body portion having its two legs spaced apart to receive a pocket edge therebetween. lugs extending inwardly from the lower end of one of the legs, a lever pivoted to said lugs intermediate its ends. the ends of said lever being` at an angle to the intermediate portion.
3. A clip comprisinga U-shaped body portion having its two legs spaced apart to receive a pocket edge therebetween, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to the lower end of one of the legs, both ends of said lever being at an angle to the intermediate portion thereof, and means normally retaining the intermediate portion substantially parallel to the legs.
fi. A clip comprising a U-shaped member havin@ its two legs parallel and equidistantly spaced at all points, a. lever pivoted` intermediate its ends to the lower end of one of y the legs and normally biased to a position at an angle to the legs, with the upper` part of the level1 extending across the space between the legs, the lower part of the lever forming substantially an angular` extension of said leg and the .intermediate tially parallel to thelegs.`
