PENCIL-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. CARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a pocket pencil holder, and has for its object, the provision of means for facilitating the holding of articles in a pocket, for preventing displacement thereof, such as indelible pencils, fountain pens, and lead pencils, etc.

Another object of the invention is the peculiar construction of a device which comprises a minimum number of parts, is simple and efficient in operation, and is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and construct.

l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the clamps and the casing carrying the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of the casing or frame and showing one of the clamps or socketdevices in section. Fig. 4 is a transverse, sectional view of a pocket and my device positioned therein. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the guides and holders. F'g. 6 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the present invention, showing the body, guides, and extensions, or lips formed of one piece.

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates a casing or frame, which comprises an angle body formed by a vertical portion 2 and a horizontal portion 3. The vertical portion 2 is curved, throughout its length, to conform to the contour of th pocket when a coat or garment is buttoned around a person. The horizontal or upper portion 3 is also curved, at its front edge 4, to conform to the shape of the pocket 5, Fig. 4, when the device is positioned therein. The front edge 4 is, preferably, formed with vertical, dove-tailed notches or sockets 5, within which is sprung the notched portions 6 of the metallic guiding andholding-members 7.

Each member 7 is formed from a single piece or light, resilient metal, so that the upper end'of the body may be positioned in the notches 5 for fixedly securing the same to the body of the device. The body of each guide 7 is curved transversely, as at 8, for producing a guide for a pen, pencil, or other object that may be inserted into the clamping devices or sockets 9, whereby the point of the object, as for instance, the pencil, would not come in contact with the side of the pocket and tear or injure the same. The guide is provided with a lip or extension 10, bent back upon the body portion, and the lip is bent outwardly at its lower end for facilitating the insertion of the upper edge of the pocket between the small lip 10 and the body of the guide or holder 7. The lip 10 of each of the guides is provided with an indented portion 1 1, producing an inwardly-extending tooth or nipple, and the body portion is also provided with an indented or inwardly-extending tooth 12, producing a nipple, contiguous to the portion or nipple 11, whereby a toothed inner face is formed upon each guide holder that is engaged by the garment, and the garment is securely clamped between the parallel portions of the guide, thereby obviating the likelihood of the device being easily or accidentally removed from the pocket, as the nipples or teeth produced by portions 11 and 12 produce a roughened, inner face that grips the garment securely.

Each clampdevice or socket E) is formed or placed in an elongated aperture 13 of the horizontal portion 3, and each socket or clamp-device comprises a stationary or fixed jaw 14 and a sliding or movable jaw 1.5. Each jaw is curved transversely, and is provided, at its upper end, with a flange overhanging the upper face of portion 3. The fixed jaw 14 is soldered or may be formed from a part of the angle body 1 of the device, and its upper flanged edge reinforces the con nection between said fixed jaw and the portion 3. The movable jaw 1.5 is prevented from dropping through the aperture 13, by means of the flanged, upper edge, and, therefore, it will be seen that the movable aw can easily slide within the aperture 13 without displacement, under normal conditions. Each movable jaw 15 is provided, upon its outer face, with a horizontal lug or extension 16; the lug or extension being formed intermediate the ends of the jaw and below the under face of portion 3, whereby I comprising a body provided with article expansible means, as for instance, a rubberband, or spring 17 may be positioned around the jaws in each clamp-device or socket, and by reason of the lug flange 16, said expansible means will not be displaced, and will normally hold the abutting inner edges 18 of the jaws together for clamping an article, as for instance, a pencil in the socket or clamp. While the flange on the movable jaw will prevent the same from being shoved down through the opening 13, the surrounding expansible or flexible means 17 will also act as a holding means for preventing the jaw from being shoved upward, and it will, therefore, be noted that while each movable jaw can freely slide upon the portion 3, still when the parts are assembled, the jaw can not be easily displaced, and especially through accidental movement.

From the foregoing description, it is to be noted that I have provided a device which will retain a pencil, pen, or like object in a pocket against accidental displacement, even though the operator should partly or entirely reverse the normal position of the garment, whereby an object would be spilled or dumped out of the pocket, if it was not secured therein.

My device has a clamping means involving an expansible structure, for accommodating different size articles, and, at the same time, facilitating the insertion of the articles and holding the same securely in position upon or within the device.

In Fig. 7, I have shown a single-piece device in which the body portion 1 is provided at its front edge with integral guides or holding members 7 and, preferably, stamped from the members 7 are clamping extensions or lips 10, which perform the same function as lips or extensions 10, for it will be seen that I have provided a horizontal body or flat portion having at one edge preferably, a plurality of pairs of vertical spring clamps, one portion of which clamps being a guide for a pencil or pen holder or like member, that is positioned in the openings or apertures in the upper portion or body.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body portion, of a guide secured to said body portion, said guide formed from a single strip of resilient metal and provided with a transversely curved body, said body provided, at its upper end, with a portion or lip bent back thereon, and said body and lip provided with inwardly-extending portions constituting a roughened structure upon their contiguous faces adapted to be engaged by a portion of a pocket, and article-holding means carried by said body.

holding means, said body provided with a dove-tail notch in one edge, a resilient guide sprung into said notch, and said guide provided with a curved body and with a clan'ip formed at one end.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a body provided with a horizon tal portion having a vertical dovetailed notch in its outer edge, a guide provided with notches upon opposite portions, said. guide formed fro n1 resilient metal and having its notched portions seated in the dove-tail notch, a portion of said guide bent back upon its body, the bent portion formed with a nipple, and the body portion formed with a nipple contiguous to said nipple ol' the bent portion.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, said casing comprising a longitudinally-curved, vertical portion and a horizontal portion integral with said vertical portion, said horizontal portion provided with an elongated opening or aperture, a clamp-device positioned in said aperture, said clamp-device comprising a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, said movable ja v slidably mounted in said aperture, and 'expansible means normally holding said jaws in engagement.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a clamp-device carried by said casing, said clamp-device comprising a pair of jaws, one of said jaws provided with an extension or lug, and means positioned upon said jaws and engaging said lug for normally holding said aws together.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a casing or frame provided with an elongated aperture, a clamp-device constituting a socket positioned in the aperture, said clamp-device comprising a fixed aw and a movable jaw, said movable jaw provided, at its upper end, with a flange in engagement with the upper face of the casing, said movable aw provided with an extension or lug intermediate its length, and means positioned between said extension or lug and the casing for normally holding said jaws together for clamping an article when positioned be tween the same.

7. A device of the character described, comprising a casing or frame, a clamp-device constituting a socket extending through a portion of said casing, said clamp-device comprising a stationary jaw and a bodily-movable sliding jaw, and means for exerting pressure upon the movable jaw for normally holding the same in engagement with the stationary jaw when an article is not between said jaws.

8. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, article-holding means carried by said casing, said casing provided with a long, inner clamping-member and a short, outer clamp-member, the inner clampinernber adapted to be positioned in a pocket and being curved transversely and its inner portion opening toward said article-holding means, and the outer clamp-member adapted to engage the outer face of a pocket, substantially as specified.

9. A device of the character described, comprising a horizontal casing, provided at its front edge with an outer and an inner clamping-member, said casing also provided with an article-receiving opening, the inner clamping-member bulged outwardly and having its inner portion opening toward said article-receiving opening, and said outer clamping-member provided with an inwardly-extending nipple adapted to engage the outer fame of a piece of cloth forming a pocket, substantially as described.

10. A pencil-holder, comprising a flat, horizontal body, curved inwardly throughout its length at its rear edge and provided upon its outer edge with a plurality of clainpingj devices, said body provided with a plurality l,

of vertical apertures for receiving articles, each clamping-device co nprising an inner and an outer clamping-member, the inner clamping-member curved transversely and opening toward said article-holding means and the outer clamping-member adapted to be positioned on the outside of a pocket and engaged against the outer face thereof.

11. A device of the character described, comprising a body formed from a flat piece of material and curved inwardly at its rear edge and provided with an outwardly-curved front edge, said body provided with vertical apertures, garment engaging means positioned in said apertures, and a plurality of clamping-devices secured, at their upper ends, to the outer edge of the body.
