The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of paper clips or holders and. to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive device, of strong and durable construction, adapted to be easily manufactured. and capable of securing clan'iping bills and various other memo-' randaand of being readily operated to release the same to permit any of its contents to be removed and to enable other papers to be placed. in it.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel. combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and. minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper clip or holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional. view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 41: is a detail view of the spring.
Trike numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a back or body consisting of athin board having a reduced upper portion 2 and provided thereat with an opening 3 to enable the device to be con- Specification of Letters Patent.

veniently hung on a nail or other support. The back or body is provided at its lower portion with longitudinal. slots 4, one of which is adapted to be engaged by a spring comprising a transverse coil. 5 and side arms t3 and 7, having inturned laterally projectmg portions 8 and 9. The coil is arranged transversely of the board or body above the slot 4. and one of the arms, preferably the arm 7 extends into one of the slots and engages the inner face of the bore which has a transverse groove 10 to receive the laterally projecting portion 9 of the arm 7. The laterally projecting portion 8 of the arm 6 engages in. a groove 11 of a clamping lever 12 fulcrumed intermediate of its ends on the coil of the spring and provided at its inner or rear face with the transverse groove 13 to receive the coil and permit it to ride on the same in its pivotal action. The lower end of the clamping lever or member is grooved at its inner face at 1 1 to form a door or engaging portion 15 which is located above the partially covered portion of the back or body and cooperates with the same in gripping the papers. The two slots form a tongue which is resilient and the upper arm 16 of the lever 01' member is tapered by beveling at the inner face and is adapted to be depressed to lift the lower clamping arm out of engagement with the contents of the paper clip or holder.
hat is claimed is A paper clip or holder including a back having spaced longitudinal slots forming a tongue, the latter being resilient, a clamping member or lever extending longitudinally of the resilient tongue of the back or body and adapted to cooperate with the same in gripping the contents of the clip or holder and a spring forming a fulcrum for the clamping lever or member and provided with means for connecting it with the back or body and with the said lever or member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
