Description

J. A. FREED RECORD CLIP Aug. 15, 1967 Filed Dec. 2, 1965 IQECORDS mm X 5 550 United States Patent 3,335,467 RECORD CLIP Joseph Alex Freed, 849 Beck St., Bronx, N.Y. 10459 Filed Dec. 2, 1965, Ser. No. 511,030 Claims. (Cl. 24-66) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A special clip for holding papers together, comprised of several individual clips assembled into a single unit, each clip serving to hold a different group of papers than another of the clips, thus readily classifying the papers being held.
This invention relates generally to clips for securing together various papers such as bills or records.
A principal object is to provide a record clip having auxiliary paper securement means to assure protection against accidental detachment thereof.
Another object is to provide a record clip having a plurality of clip assemblies each of which serves to hold different categories of papers.
Another object is to provide a record holder having a yieldable hinge means in one of the clip assemblies.
Another object is to provide a record clip that could be used to hold book pages removed from a book, so to eliminate need to carry an entire heavy book, such as by students, and wherein one clip member holds pages that have been already read, and the other holds pages yet to be read, thus separating the same.
Other objects are to provide a record clip which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower jaw of the center clip assembly,
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3.-3 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 44 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of a yieldable hinge assembly incorporated in one of the clip assemblies, and
FIGURE 6 is a top view of the record clip shown in operative use.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the numeral 10 represents a record clip according to the present invention wherein there is a main or center clip assembly 11 and a pair of side clip assemblies 12 and 13 pivotally secured thereto.
The center clip assembly includes an upper jaw 14 and lower jaw 15 hinged together by interlocking tabs 16 and 17. A leaf spring 18 normally urges the jaws closed.
The lower jaw has a pair of upstanding paper stops 19 to limit the position of the edge 20 of papers 21. A row of openings 22 in the lower jaw serves to retain various colored strings 23 used as paper markers; the strings having a knot at one end to prevent disengagement from the device.
Near the lip 24 of the lower jaw hinge means 25 are provided for securing a pivotable fork 26 having prongs 27 for impaling papers, notes and possibly even paper money. A row of openings 28 receive various colored strings 29 similarly as above described. A row of openings 30 on each end prong 27a selectively hold a lock bar 31 which prevents impaled papers from falling off therefrom. Tabs 32 in the lower jaw permit placement of an identification tab therewith.
The upper jaw likewise has tabs 33 tification card 34.
A groove 35 in the upper tab holds one bended edge 36 of leaf spring 18, the opposite bent edge 37 thereof being passed under raised portion 38 of the lower jaw. A like construction is present in clip assembly 12.
The side clip assembly 12 made preferably from sheet metal includes an upper jaw 40 and lower jaw 41 pivotally secured together by interlocking tabs 42 and 43. The lower jaw 41 is fastened by a rivet 44 to lower jaw 15. The lower jaw 41 has a row of upstanding teeth 45 struck out therefrom; the pointed ends of the teeth being received within a groove 46 on the underside of the upper jaw 40. An upstanding paper stop 47 and row of openings 48 for receiving colored strings 49 are included in the lower jaw 41 construction. Tabs 50 on the upper jaw 40 retain identification card 51.
The clip 12 can be reversed by passing rivet 44 through the opening 44a. Thus turning the jaw around, if preferred.
The side clip assembly 13 includes an upper jaw 52 and lower jaw 53 secured by a rivet 54 to lower jaw 15. Jaws 52 and 53 are preferably molded of plastic and are hinged together by a wire 55 which allows the jaws to separate at the hinge area upon excessive paper load therebetween yet retain clamping pressure. The lower jaw 53 includes upstanding paper stop 56, a row of openings 57 retaining colored strings 58, and a row of upstanding pointed needle shaped teeth 59 the pointed ends of which are received within a groove 60 on the upper jaw 52. Tabs 61 on the upper jaw hold identification card 62.
In operative use each clip assembly holds papers by their lower edges to permit turning over the upper edges of the papers and offer full view of each page upper area. As shown in FIGURE 6 clip assembly 12 holds unpaid bills 63 and clip assembly 13 holds paid bills 64.
In use, fork 26 is retained between the upper and lower jaws. If preferred, papers can be held along a side edge in each clip.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a record clip, the combination of a center clip assembly, and a side clip assembly on opposite sides of said center clip assembly, said center clip assembly comprising an upper jaw, a lower jaw pivotally secured thereto, a spring therebetween to urge the lips of said jaws together, and a fork pivotally secured near the said lip of said lower jaw, said fork being pivotable between a position between said jaws and a position outside of between said jaws.
2. In a record clip the combination as set forth in claim 1 wherein said fork comprises a plurality of prongs, the end prongs of which each has a row of teeth, a lock rod selectively received within said teeth openings for retaining papers impaled on said prongs.
3. In a record clip the combination as set forth in claim 1 Where each said side clip assembly comprises an upper and lower jaw, said lower jaws having a row of upstanding teeth, the upper ends of said teeth being receivable Within a groove on the underside of said upper jaws.
4. In a record clip the combination as set forth in claim 1 wherein all of said lower jaws has an upstanding paper stop to limit the edges of papers secured in said clip assemblies.
5. In a record clip the combination as set forth in claim 1 wherein each of said lower jaws and said fork has a row of openings and an assortment of colored strings for retaining iden- 3 4 having a knot on at least one end, each one of said strings 1,569,986 1/ 1926 Kurtzeborn. being secured in each of said openings. 1,591,732 7/1926 Atchley 24252 2,333,353 11/1943 Zanella 248452 References Cited 2,943,372 7/1960 Fleming 2466 UNITED STATES PATE 5 NTS FOREIGN PATENTS 7/1884 Polkmhorn 24-253 X 9 1 99 La Veins 24 253 X 97,233 2/1933 SWltZeI'lfiIld.
