WILLIAM F. GILBERT, OF DERBY, GGNNECTICUT.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915..
Application filed October 5, 191%. Serial No. 865,096.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, VViLLIAM F; GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-- Figure 1 a side view partly in section of a temporary binder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 8 a view in vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4: a sectional view on the line ab of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to an improvement in temporary binders such as are commonly used for holding newspapers, magazines and other articles providing a holder with a handle by which a magazine or paper may be held when in use, and suspended, if desired, when not in use.
The object of this invention is a simple arrangement of parts whereby a magazine or paper may be held, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a back 2 formed from wood or other suitable material and provided with a handle 3. The length of this back depends upon the use for which it is intended, whether for newspapers or magazines. Beyond the handle the face of the back is formed with a groove 4 in which pins 5 are located for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Entering into the handle is a chamber 6 the outer end of which may be lined with a ferrule 7, if desired; and extending forward from this chamber is a channel 8 opening into a recess 9 formed in the face of the back at the base of the groove forward of the handle. This recess is provided for the irtroduction of the stem 10 of a hook 11. The stem 10 is threaded to receive a socket nut 12, which, if desired, may have a bearing on a washer 13. When the hook is in place a block 14 is located in the recess 9 and secured by a screw 15 or otherwise so that it may be removed if desired. Fixed in the outer end of the back is an eye 16 by which the binder may be supported; and connected with this eye is a binding rod 17 thelower end of which is adapted to en gage with the hook 11. This rod extends through the groove ii: and between the pairs of pins 5. This rod 17 is raised out of the groove and placed between the folds of a paper or between the leaves of a magazine, and then pressed downward into engagement with the hook 11 which, if desired, can be provided with a slight notch 18 to insure the engagement of the rod with the hook. When the rod is thus engaged with the hook the nut 12 is turned with a spanner wrench or key and the hook drawn rearward so as to place sufiicient tension upon the rod to prevent its disengagement from the hook. A paper or magazine is thus firmly secured in place and is provided with a suitable handle by which it may be conveniently held. Preferably and as shown, the upper face of the back at the forward end of the handle portion is cut away to admit the finger to grasp the inner end of the rod to disengage it from the hook.
1 claim 1. A temporary binder comprising a back including a handle portion, a hook mounted in the said handle portion, a rod connected with the outer end of the back and adapted at its opposite end to engage with said hook, and means for drawing the hook rearward.
2. A temporary binder comprising a back including a handle portion, the face of the back formed with a longitudinal groove, a hook mounted in said handle portion and longitudinally movable therein, a binding rod extending through said groove and having one end connected to the forward end of the back and adapted at its opposite end to engage with said hook, and means for moving said hook rearward.
3. A binder comprising a back including a handle portion the face of said back formed with a longitudinal groove, a recess in the base of said groove forward of said handle, a hook extending into said handle, a block practically filling said recess, a binding rod connected with the forward end of the back and extending into engagement with said hook, and means for moving saidhook rearward.
4. A temporary binder comprising a back including a handle portion, a longitudinal groove in the face of said back, a recess in tudinal groove in the face of said back, a
hook longitudinally movable insaid handle,
a binding rod extending through said grbove and connected with the back at the forward end and adapted to engage with said hbok, and pins in said groove on opposite s'des of said binding rod.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. GILBERT.
