FREDERICK L. WOOD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS,- ASSIGNOR TO AEOLIAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
DIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Application filed February 11, 1908. Serial No. 4=15,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. Wool), a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dies and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved die which is simple in construction, can easily be sharpened, is held firmly and securely and can easily and rapidly be replaced by another at small cost. 11 the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a transverse sectional View of my improved die, die bed, punch guide and punch. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken away. The die plate 1 made of comparatively thin steel, has two parallel rows of holes 22 and has its side edges beveled downward and outward. This die plate is placed upon and in a die bed 3 which in turn rests upon and is secured on a base 4. The die bed 3 is provided in its upper surface with a longitudinal groove or recess 5 of much greater width than the die plate 1, one side of this groove or recess being beveled downward and outward as at 6 to correspond with the beveled side edge of the die plate 1 so that the beveled edge of this die plate fits closely and snugly against the beveled edge of the recess. The
opposite side edge of the recess 5 is made vertical as shown. For the purpose of securely holding the die plate in place, a holding and filling piece 8 18 provided which has one edge made straight, that is at right angles to thetop and bottom, and the other side edge of the holding plate is beveled upward and outward so as to fit snugly and firmly against the corresponding downwardly and outwardly inclined or beveled side edge of the die plate 1. Screws 9 are passed through holes in thefilling and holding plate 8 and screwed through holes in the die bed 8 into holes in the base 4. By means of these screws the die bed 3 is held firmly on the base 4 and the filling and clamping plate 8 is forced down and thereby presses the die plate 1 laterally against the beveled edge 6 of the recess 5. So as to permit of forcing down this filling and locking plate 8 the same is of less thickness than the die plate 11 as shown. The heads of the screws 9 fit in counter-sinks in the upper surface of the plate '8 so that the tops of the screws will not project above the upper surface of the plate 8. The two rows of holes 2 in the guide plate are so arranged that one row will it be above a corresponding row of holes 10 extending from the bottom of the recess 5 to the bottom of the die bed 3 and which. are adapted to register with a series of holes 11, formed in the base 4 the diameter of .s
which holes increases from the upper to the lower end. Above each hole 10 in the die bed a punch 12'is guided to move up and down in a punch guide 13.
As shown the die plate is held in the die bed in such a manner that the left hand row of holes 2 is now in use and registers with the corresponding holes 10. In case these holes are worn the die can be reversed so that the other row of holes 2 register with the holes 10. In either case the die plate is held in place by the locking and filling plate 8 which in turn is held in place by the screws 9, as stated above. When the entire die is dull and needs sharpening all that is necessary is to remove the screws 9 and the filling and clamping plate 8 whereupon the die plate can be slid laterally until it is disengaged from the beveled edge of the recess and then lifted out. For replacing the die plate it is only necessary to place it in the recess 5 and then move it laterally until one of the beveled edges rests against the beveled edge of the recess 5, place the locking and filling plate 8 into the recess 5 and secure it in place by means of the screws 9.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a die body having a lon itudinal groove in its upper surface, of a die plate in said groove, and a filling and locking plate in the groove and bearing against one edge of the die plate and the other edge bearing against one side of the groove in the die bed, and screws passing vertically through the filling and locking plate into the die bed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a die bed having a groove in its upper surface, one edge of said groove being vertical and the other inclined downward and outward, of a die plate having two longitudinal edges inclined downward and outward to fit the beveled edge of the groove and a filling plate having one edge at right angles to its top and bottom surfaces and thevv other beveled tofitthei beveled. side, edge of the die plate, which. filling plate is placed in the groove and rests with its beveled side edge against one beveled side edge of the die and'with its vertical edge against an edge of the groove, and means for securing said filling plate in the groove, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a die bed having a groove in its upper surface, one edge of said groove being vertical and the other inclined downward and outward, of a die plate having two longitudinal edges inclined down ward and outward to fit the beveled edge of the groove and a filling plate having one edge at right angles to its top and bottom surfaces and the other beveled to fit the beveled side edge of the die plate, which filling plate is placed in the groove and rests with. its beveled-sideedge against one beveled side edge of the die and With its vertical edge against an edge of the groove, which filling plate is of less thickness than the die plate and screws for holding the filling plate in place, said screws passin vertically through the filling and locking p ate. and into, the die. bed, substantiallyas set forth. I
4. The combination with a die bed having a groove in its upper surface and a series of holes extending from the bottom of the groove to the bottom of the die bed, a die plate having two longitudinal rows of holes which holes are equi-distant from the center FREDERICK L. WOOD.
