"Ul l dTATEd. PATENT EDWARD L. CHOT'I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO HUGO J. CHGT'I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DENTAL TOOL.
Application filed October 13, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD L. Grror'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dental tools and has for its object the provision of an improved tool of this character which is especially capable of convenient use for holding dental inlays or similar bodies.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a tool embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, Fig. 3, an enlarged interior face View of one of two clamping jaws employed in the construction, and Fig. 4, a top plan view corresponding to Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a head 1 having parallel ears 2 projecting from one end thereof and an internally threaded sleeve 3 projecting from the other end thereof. A ferrule 4. is soldered or otherwise secured to head 1 in position to encompass a portion of sleeve 8 so as to leave a securing space around said sleeve. A hollow handle 5 has one end secured in the space around sleeve 3 and an operating rod 6 is extended through hollow handle 5, threaded in sleeve 3 and provided at its outer end with a knurled operating head 7 as indicated. Rod 6 is provided at its inner end with a conical point 8 which projects from head 1 as shown. Clamping jaws 9 are pivotally mounted on pivots 10 between ears 2 between their ends with their inner ends 11 arranged on opposite sides of conical point 8 to cooperate therewith. The outer ends of clamping jaws 9 are turned inwardly toward each other as at 12 and the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 794,891.
adjacent faces thereof are made concave in form and serrated as at 13. Notches or sockets 141 are provided in tie inner sides of clamping jaws 9 adjacent pivots l0 and a coiled compression spring 15 is positioned between said sockets so as to hold said clamping jaws normally separated as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
In use when it is desired to engage a body such as a dental inlay, the jaw ends 12 are placed over said body and are brought together by turning handle 7 thus forcing conical point 8 between the inner ends of jaws 9 and forcing jaw ends 12 together as will be readily understood. This arrangement constitutes a simple and effective one for forcing jaw ends 12 together and one which is self-locking so that an article en-,
gaged between said jaw ends will be permanently held thereby until released. By making the jaw ends concave in form and serrated the jaw ends are especially adapted for engaging dental inlays which are more or less irregular in form.
The specific construction disclosed is an eilicient one for the purpose and capable of economical manufacture.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tool comprising a head having parallel ears projecting from one end thereof and an internally threaded sleeve projecting from the opposite end thereof; a hollow handle fitted over said sleeve; a pair of clamping jaws pivoted between said ears; a ferrule secured to said head and encompassing the corresponding end of said handle above said sleeve; and a rod threaded in said sleeve, extending through said handle and provided with a conical point engaging between the inner ends of said jaws, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD L. CHOTT.
