NEWSPAPB R CLIP.
(No Model.)
Patented June 2, 1896.
Iwezzfir: I M ziiafljlf W11,
NrrEn STATES ATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL H. MANN, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
NEWSPAPER-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,410, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed December 21, 1895. Serial No. 572,898. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIoHAnL I-I. MANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holyoke, in the county of I-lampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Newspaper- Glips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to newspapenclips, the object thereof being to provide a clip by which a newspaper can be held in a position convenient for the reader and one from which the paper can be quickly removed and another inserted in its place; and it consists in a holder having a trouglrshaped opening in one side thereof and a retaining U-shaped clip pivoted within said slot in the holder by one end and secured therein by its opposite end by means of a bolt on the handle of the holder, the newspaper being secured between the said retaining-clip and the holder, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the newspaper clip embodying this invention, showing a portion of a newspaper therein. Fig. 2 is a section taken lengthwise through the holder and the retaining-clip. Fig. 3 is a cross-seotion taken 011 line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a cross-section taken on line 4 4:, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, A is the holder, made of wood, preferably, and provided with a handle D. A deep groove a is cut in one face of said holder A and there is pivoted therein at the end thereof opposite the handle of the holder a retaining-clip 13, made, preferably, of metal, of U shape in cross-section and through the bottom of which project pins E, which pass through the paper and into the recesses R in the holder, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in the drawings,wl1en the clip is brought down into the slot a in the holder to confine the newspaper therein. In order to retain the said clip B in its posi tion in the slot and hold the paper securely between it and the holder A, a bolt F is let into the holder in line with the slot at therein in such position that when the clip B is swung down into the slot a the bottom of the U-shaped clip is just below the level of the bolt F, so that when the bolt is shot out of the case the point thereof enters the end of the clip B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. The said bolt may or may not be provided with the spring F, as desired.
The end of the holder opposite to the handle is provided with a screw-eye by which the clip can be hung up, if desired.
From the above description of this newspaper-clip it will be seen that the newspaper is so securely held therein as to be entirely free from any movement in the clip in a direction at right angles thereto, and hence offers a material advantage over those articles as at present constructed, as it is impossible for the paper to become loose and torn when confined as in the clip. Furthermore, said clip is of strong and light construction and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A newspaper-clip, consisting of a holder, provided with a longitudinal groove to receive the clip and the papers, recesses at the bottom of the groove to receive the projections on the clip, and a recess in its handle end to receive. a retaining-bolt, combined with a U-shaped clip, pivoted at one end of the groove, and provided with sharp-pointed projections which penetrate the papers, and a retaining-bolt which catches in the end of the clip, and looks it in place, substantially as shown.
2. A newspaper-clip comprising a holder having the slot (0, therein, a metal clip,U- shaped in cross-section, and provided with pins E, lying within said slot and pivoted by one end therein, and a bolt in the holder engaging the free end of the metal clip, subsubstantially as described.
