B. C. BECKER CLASP FOR PENCILS Filed Nov. 18, 1922 INVENTDR following description, taken in elements shown in Fig. 1, but shown in the position as when grippingthe'edge of a garmentr I Fig. 4, is a sectional View of'Fig. 3, taken on line H. I Fig. 5, represents a modified form of my invention. a a Fig. 6, is another modified form of my invention.
In carrying out my-invention I form a firmly in the position at which it cavity or groove Patented Oct. 25, 1927.

invention relates to cl'asps foi lead Pen ilsto "attach said pencil to the'edgeoi'a'garthe like; the purpose of which. is
met p ketr Theobject'ot this invention isto provide a clasp which'normally'. tends to recede and lie substantially fiushwith the surface of the 'body of the pencil. I A further object"istofprovide a clasp which grips the garment throughout subnti y Fig. 3, 1s a reproduction of the principal 6 in 7, and provide a clasp 8 which is adapted to close said cavity in substantially true form with the surface of the pencil. In the cavity 6 is a spring .9 which is fixed atone end of the pencil 7 through the rivets 10, and the other-end to the clasp '8 through the rivets 12. The one end of the spring 9 isbent to return upon itselfas shown at 11,
thereby forming a resilient gripping device for gripping Through. 'the normal action of p the spring 9, the garment-119 is also gripped'by the clasp 8 at the point 21, and along the greater part of its length in the manner as shown at 23, Fig. i. I
A button 1a is hired to the clasp 8 and adapted to'contact with the bottom ot the cavity. 6, when; the clasp is substantially its whole length; the object of this extensive gripping action is to render shown partially in section 00' link 26 through the the side of the pencil in Fig.

Forreleasing the clasp from the garment 1'9, it is"'.simply a matterot gripping thehead end2 ibf" I the penc l and slipping the clasp from the garment; "the 'sprin'g 9' being :sufliciently yielding'to permit such action.
'FlVith reterence to the'modified form shown '1n'FigI'5', the clasp- 8gi's here hinged to'the pin 25; the link 26being also hinged to the block 28through the pin 27.. The clasp18 carries a-hook 33, and through the spr1ng3O being adapted to ap-; ply pressure on this hook in the direction indicated by the arrow 31, the entire mecha- IllSIIl is normally held in the position as showng The spring 30 and the block 28, of 1. course are fixed to the body of the pencil? through the tacks 29. In this device it is apparent that itpressure is applied on theend dicated by the arrow 16, the opposite end 17 will rise out of the cavity 6 to permit insertion of the edge ofthe garment. The-gen eral clasping action of this device is substan tially the same as that described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4. a
. IVithreference to the 6, this device consistsof a'simple spring wire 53, fixed in the pencil body 7 at 34:, and adapted'to close the cavity'6 substantially flush with the surface: of the pencil as shownr It is apparent in this construction that'if pressure is applied on the end 32.,and v in the direction indicatedby arrow 16, the.
modified form shown 1 -32 of the clasp-8 and in'the direction Jin- I end 17 will rise out of the cavity to permit I insertion of the edge of the garment. The general gripping action of this device is substantially the same as that, describ'edwith.
reference to Fig. 5 and Figs. 3 and 4.
To facilitate the pressing in of the end- I '32 of the, clasp '8, abutto n may be fixed-to" n the clasp as shownat 15..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
' claspin said cavity, said clasp being ar, ranged to close sald cavity 1n a manner sub- 1. The combination of a pencil having a cavityl in the side thereof, and a garment stantially flush with the surface; of 7 said pencil and capable of opening to grip the garment, .when pressure is'applied thereto while it;,-lies within said cavity." f
The combination with a pencil: having a cavity in the side .thereof, of a garment-clasp in said: cavity, and resilient means carried by. thepencilwhich normally tends to draw v Isaid' clasp into said cavity and thereby clamp :the I garment.
3. The combinationiwith alpencil havingga cavity in theside'th'ereof, a garmentclasp in said cavity, and resilient means which normally'tendsto draw said clasp in said will tip andarranged whereby the one end of said clasp will raise out ofsaid" cavity 7 when pressure is applied at the opposite end thereof, and resilient means which tends to hold said clasp'against tipping.
5. The combination of a pencil having. a
cavity in the side thereof, a garment clasp in said cavity, a fulcrum upon which said clasp will tip and arranged whereby the one end of said clasp will raise out of said cavity when pressure is applied at the opposite end thereof-,resilicnt means which tends to hold said clasp against tipping, and resilient means-Which tends to draw said clasp into said cavity.
. 6. The combination of a pencil having a cavity in the side thereof, .a garment clasp in said cavity, and afulcrum upon whichsaid applied at the oppositeend 7. The combination of a' pencil having a cavit in the side thereof, a arment clas in said cavity, a fulcrum upon which said clasp w1ll t1p and arranged whereby the one end of said clasp will raise out of said cavity when pressure is applied at the opposite end at said opposite end.
In testimony whereof I affi'x my signature.
