Description

E. GASS.
CLAMP FOR SUPPORTERS. APPLICATION FILED APR. I9, 1913.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
COLUIIIIA PMNDGIAPH c pair 5:
STA
EMERY GASS, OF FIBRE, MICHIGAN. 1
CLAMP FOR SUBOETER$ AppIication filed April 19, 1913.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY GASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fibre, in the county of Chippewaand State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps and more particularly to that type which is used upon supporters, the particular type of clamp illustrated being especially used on suspender or garter tabs and having for its object to provide an eflicient structure which may be cheaply constructed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the pivoting ears. Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal section.
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein, the clasp comprises a pair of jaw members 1 and 2 which are formed from a single sheetof metal having sufiicient inherent resiliency to cause normal spreading of the jaw members, the said jaws being curved inwardly as at 2'. Each jaw member has its extremity formed with an inwardly turned toothed flange 3 which overlap each other when the jaw members are forced into engagement with each other, as will be hereinafter understood. Formed from the strip of metal and projecting upwardly in parallel relation from the lower jaw member, straddling the upper jaw member as shown are two pivotal ear members, the upper ends of which have inwardly turned and pointed trunnions 5 upon which the short end of the lever 6 is adapted to bear against and brace the upper jaw member into engagement with the lower jaw member, the lower leg traveling beyond center, so that when the longer leg or operating portion of the lever is in engagement with the upper jaw member the lever will be locked against accidental displacement.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. it), 1915.
Serial No. 762,266.
The lever 6 as shown is constructed from a single strip of material bent in its length to provide a sleeve 9 coextensive with the width of the strip and adapted to receive the pointed trunnions 5 on which the lever is pivotally mounted. The longitudinal edges of the sleeve are disposed in contacting engagement with each other as shown at 10 and terminate in oppositely curved upper and lower leg portions 12 and 13 respectively which normally engage the jaw 2 adjacent its upper and lower end. The upper end of the leg portion 12 terminates in a downwardly curved portion let to permit the same to freely slide over the inwardly curved portion of the jaw 2 on movement of the lever to operative and inoperative position and thus prevent binding and strain between the various parts.
Secured in the loop 7 which is formed in producing the jaws is a ring 8 by which the clamping member may be attached to the suspender or garter tab, as will be readily understood.
That is claimed is:
As a new article of manufacture, a clamp comprising front and rear movable jaws, the latter having ears projecting forwardly from a point between the ends thereof, an operating lever constructed from a single length of material bent to provide an intermediate offset sleeve pivoted between said ears, the terminals of said sleeve being dis posed in engagement and extensions therefrom to provide divergently disposed leg portions normally contacting the front jaw, the free end of the upper leg portion being curved inwardly to prevent binding between the parts on movement of the lever to operative 0r inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMERY GASS.
