SOAP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,143, dated September 16, 1902. Application filed May 1,1902. Serial No. 105,463- (No model.)
To v7/Z whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, ANTON E. DUSEK, acitiren of the United States, residing at Crowlake, in the county of Jerauld and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Soap-Holders; and I do declare the following to. bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 1o appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to soap-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, du rablein use, comparatively inexpensive of production and which may be readily attached to a washstand or other support within convenient `reach and which is designed to firmly hold a cake of soap in convenient position to permit of a person using the same without removing it from the holder, thereby avoiding the annoyance of dropping the soap onto the floor or into the basin, and thus preventing the splashing of water from the basin over the persons gaie ments.
Vith this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved soap-holder, showing a cake of soap retained in position between the jaws of the holder. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
In the drawings, l and 2 denote the springjaws of the holder, the outer ends of said jaws being roughened or provided with teeth 2 to embed into the cake 0l soap. The inner ends of the jaws l and 2 are arched, as shown at 3 and 4E, and are connected, as shown at 5, while the jaw 2 is formed with a bowed or coiled spring 6.
7 denotes clips for connecting the parallel portions 3 and 4 and preventing the spread of the same when said portions are secured to 'a support by a screw 8, which is inserted be* tween the parallel members 3 and 4 and with 5o its head forces the said members from their bowed or arched position 'to a straight position,
and thus firmly retains the holder to the support, as the tension of said members 3 and 4 when straightened out by the screw results in effecting an additional friction of said members again-st the support to which the holder is secured. The spring 6 exerts its energy to force the jaws toward each other, and thus securely clamp the cake et' soap in convenient position to be grasped and to permit of the hands being worked back and forth along the surface of the same for the purpose of producing a lather. In order to hold these vjaws apart, so that a cake of soap may be conveniently inserted between them, I pro- I vide a lever 9, which is pivoted'at one end to the ears 10 of a sleeve ll, xedly secured to the jaw l, and is formed at the other end with an eye l2, which embraces the jaw 2. By sliding this rod to the right the jaws will be opened and held in that positionwhile the cake of soap is being inserted between them. The free end of the lever is now moved toward the left, thus permitting the spring 6 to exert its energy and embed the jaws or teeth of the holder into the cake of soap and securely hold the soap in position for use.
From the foregoingl description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A soapholder consisting of two jaws connected together, one of said jaws being provided with a spring which exerts its energy to force its jaw toward its coacting jaw, and means for spreading said jaws apart and holding them in position to permit of the insertion of a cake of soap between said jaws, said means consisting of a lever pivoted at one end to one of the jaws and at its other end having a sliding connection with the other jaw, substantially as set forth.
1o the other jaw and is designed to hold said jaw in spread forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
position, substantially as set ANTON E. DUSEK.
