NORMAN S. WHEELER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
ROPE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed September 23, 1907. Serial No. 394,053.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN S. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a device of the class specified having features of novelty and advantage.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a general side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 7 is a central vertical section in side elevation, but showing the jaws open. Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 99 of Fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a detail sectional end view of a part of the device showing the pivotal support for the jaws.
Referring to the drawings 1 is the body member, 2 2 rope clamping jaws pivoted thereon, 3 3 the pivots, 4 4 tails on the jaws, 5 the sleeve surrounding the body, 6 6 cams acting on the jaws to close them and cause them to grip a rope, 7 7 cams acting on the tails to open the jaws, 8 a ratchet on the body, 9 a pawl on the sleeve cooperating with said ratchet to maintain the relative positions of the body and sleeve, 10 a spring for the pawl.
The operation of the device is as follows. The jaws being open a rope is passed through the aperture in the device and the sleeve is then turned, the cams 6, 6, engaging the jaws and throwing them towards one another to clamp the rope. The pawl 9 engages the ratchet 8 and'holds the body and sleeve in position to retain the jaws in their clamping position. When the rope is to be withdrawn the pawl is disengaged from the ratchet and the sleeve turned in the opposite direction, the cams 7, 7, pressing the tails 4, 4, together and opening the jaws so that the rope can be removed. A rope receiving ring 11 is secured to the sleeve 5 for the attachment of an end of rope if desired.
I claim as my invention 1. In a rope clamp a body, jaws pivoted thereon, a rotatable sleeve, and devices carried by said sleeve for opening and closing said jaws.
2. I11 a rope clamp a body, jaws pivoted thereon, a rotatable sleeve, jaw actuating devices carried by the sleeve, and means for maintaining the relative positions of the body and sleeve.
3. In a rope clamp the body, jaws pivoted thereon, tails on the jaws, a rotatable sleeve, a pair of cams acting on said jaws, and a second pair of cams acting on said tails, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
. NORMAN S. WHEELER.
