Description
'HENRY M. BmwELL'.
Improvement nl .Carriage Curtain Fastening.
No. 121,076., 'Pafented'nov. 21,1871.
N 'UNITED STATES HENRY M. BIDWELL, OF NEW HAVEN,
` FETE..
CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF ANI) STILLMAN MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,076, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HENRY M. BIDWELL, ofN ew Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fastening for Carriage-Curtain 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing` and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents in- Figure l, a front view of the fastener closed 5 Fig. 2, the same with the fastener open 5 Fig. 3, an end view; and in Fig. 4, a section on line w with the knob introduced.
This invention relates to a device to be attached to carriage-curtains to prevent the accidental disengaging of the curtain from the knob; and consists in the arrangement of a pair of pivoted jaws upon the outside of the curtain to close around the neck of the knob after the curtain has been passed onto the knob.
A represents a portion of a carriage-curtain 5 B, a perforation in the curtain, through which the knob passes. This is made in the usual manner. At some point near this perforation, here represented as above, I pivot two iiat or other conveniently-shaped jaws, C D, each provided with a notch, a, corresponding in position to the peri'oration B through the curtain 5 and when together, as in Fig. l, these two notches form an opening of less diameter than vthe head of the knob, therefore, when the curtain is pressed onto the knob the knob passes through the perforation B, while the jaws in the position in Fig. 2 are closed together, as seen in Figs. l and 4, around the knob beneath the head, and thus prevent the detachment of the curtain until the j aws are opened.
As a securityT for the two jaws when closed, I form corrugations d at the meeting ends of the jaws, as seen in Fig. 3, so that one jaw overlaping the other the end springs are closed together and securely hold the jaws in position.
I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, the herein-described fastening for carriage-curtain, consisting of the two jaws C D, constructed and applied to close onto the neck of the knob, in the manner substantially as described.
H. M. BIDWELL.
