JOHN E. WELDON, OF PORTAGE, WISCONSIN.
cowmu. HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,044, dated November 20, 196d.
Application filed April 19, 1900. Serial No. 13502. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it nutty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E.WELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portage, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Tail Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices to keep cows from switching their tails while being milked; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line LU a: in Fig. 1.
A is a wire clip having two curved rods a at one end, arranged parallel to each other and forming a loop I). These rods consist: of the end portion of the wire bent double to form the loop I) and twisted together at b.
B is a guide formed between the main portion of the wire and the end portion a, close above the twisted portion 1).
The main portion of the wire is bent around to form a loop d, which engages with the leg of the animal, and d represents curved portions which hold the loop d at a convenient distance from the clip which engages with the tail of the animal.
D is the serrated clip-plate, attached to the spring-arm e at the other end of the wire clip and which is slidable in the guide B. The clip-plate is provided with teeth 6, which are arranged upon a curve and work opposite the space between the two curved rods (0.
E is a stop or catch on the end of the springarm 6 for engaging with the loop I), and f is a projection which can be seized between the thumb and finger to operate the spring-arm. The spring-arm is free to slide longitudinally in the guide, so that the catch E can be slid out of engagement with the loop 17 to permit the spring-arm to be slid out of the guide. When the spring-arm is clear of the guide, it can be moved apart from the curved rods, so
' that the loop (1 can be slipped over the leg of the animal. The spring-arm is then placed opposite the open end of the guide and the hair of the tail is passed between the two curved rods a and the serrated edge of the plate. The plate is then pressed upon the hair and the catch is slipped into engagement with the loop, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby holding the tail securely in position.
What I claim is- 1. In a cow-tail holder, the combination, with a wire clip for engaging with the leg of the animal, said clip being provided with two curved portions at one end and a spring-arm at the other end, of a serrated plate secured to the saidspring-arm and arranged opposite the space between the said two curved portions, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cow-tail holder, the combination, with a wire clip for engaging with the leg of the animal, said clip being provided at one end with a loop, two curved portions and a guide at the opposite ends of the curved portions from the said loop, and having at its other end a spring-arm which is slidable in the said guide and provided with a catch for engaging with the said loop, of a serrated plate secured to the said spring-arm and arranged opposite the space between the two curved portions and between the said loop and guide, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cow-tail holder, the combination, with a wire clip for engaging the leg of the animal, said clip being provided with two curved portions at one end, a spring-arm at its other end, and means for locking the said arm and curved portions together, of a serrated plate secured to the said spring-arm and arranged opposite the space between the said'two curved portions, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. WELDON.
