Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON FRANZON, a native of Sweden, residing at Garwood, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stretching and Pressing Devices for Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved stretching and pressing device for trousers, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap and efficient construction of this character.
To this end the invention comprises the parts, improvements and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the device in use; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a. perspective view of one of the clamps in open condition; and Fig. 5 is a view of one of the closing springs, removed.
The device comprises two pairs of longitudinal boards or clamp members 10, which are hinged at 23 and hold and press the trousers at the creases. These clamps have springs 11 for closing them tightly upon the layers of fabric; and other springs 12 are provided for urging the clamps apart, so as to stretch the trousers. Fingers 13, secured to the clam members and projecting backward there rom in diverging relation, serve as means for opening the clamps against the tension or torsion of'the springs 11 and for holding them open by suitably connecting the fingers when the latter are pressed together. A hanger rod 14, looped at its middle to form a hanging eye, has its ends passed through eyes 15 on the upper ends of the clamps and bent upward at the extremities, as shown at 16. The eyes 15 slide down the inclined portions of the hanger rod, thus stretching the bottoms of the trousers.
The closing springs 11, of which a plurality are provided for each clamp, consist each of a spring rod having a straight body portion disposed diagonally of the backs of the clamp members with its ends bent in ward and inserted under tension or torsion, one into the back of one clamp member and the other into the back of the complementary clamp member. Fig. 5 illustrates one of the springs removed and in an untensioned condition, showing the bent ends 17 as sprung in opposite directions. By virtue of this simlower ple construction a powerful closing action is exerted and the clamps are held tightly against the trousers, thus firmly gripping and pressing the same.
pair of springs 12, are arranged at the portion of the device and are in the nature of bow springs, each pivotally secured at one end to a clamp member, as shown at 18, and at the other end adapted to be sprung into a. socket 19 in the opposite clamp member. When thus inserted, the spring bows away from the plane of the pressing and stretching device, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8.
Suitable means are provided for connecting the fingers 13, so as to hold the clamps open in the position shown in Fig. 4. To this end I preferably hook the extremity of one member of each pair of fingers, as shown at 20, so that the extremity of the other finger may be swung or sprung behind it. For ease in operation and for convenience in packing and use, the fingers are pivotally secured to the clamp members, as shown at 21.
At their upper ends the clamp members are provided with recesses 22 in their inner faces, these recesses being provided for the purpose of allowing for extra thickness in material at the bottoms of the trousers.
What I claim as new is:
1. A trousers pressing and stretching device comprising the combination of two pairs of longitudinal clamp members, a transverse spring for urging said pairs of clamp members apart, and spring rods having straight body portions disposed diagonally of and along the backs of said clamp members and having bent ends inserted under torsion one into the back of one member and the other into the back of the complementary member so as to hold said members closed.
2. A trousers pressing and stretching device comprising the combination of two pairs of longitudinal clamp members, one or more transverse springs for urging said pairs of clamp members apart, springs for holding said clamp members closed, and fingers secured to the complementary clamp members of each pair for opening them and having means for connecting the fingers so as to hold the clamp members open.
3. A trousers pressing and stretching device comprising the combination of two pairs of longitudinal clamp members, a
hanger rod with inclined portions from Which said members are suspended, transverse bo-W springs pivotally secured each at one end to a clamp member and at the other end entering a socket in the member at the opposite side, spring rods disposed diagonally of the backs of said clamp members and having bent ends inserted under tension one into the back of one member and the other into the back of the complementary member so as to hold said membersclosed,
and fingers secured to the complementary clamp members of each pair for opening complementary member so as to hold the members closed, means secured to the complementary clamp members of each pair for opening them and means for pressing the clamps apart to stretch the trousers.
5. A trousers presslng and stretching device comprising the combination of twopairs of longitudinal clamp members, one or more devices for urging said pairs of clamp members apart, torsion spring rods having straight body portions arranged at the back of said clamps and having ends inserted one into the back of one member and the other into the back of the complementary member, so as to hold the members closed and fingers pivotally secured to the complementary clamp members of each pair for opening them.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
SIMON FRANZON.
