Specification of Letters Patent. NOV, 2, 1915.
Application filed December 21, 1914. Serial No. 878,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Belt known that I, WILLIAM E. PUosL Y,
a citizen of the United States, residingat GrandRapids, 'in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined and exact descriptionio as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a My invention relates to garment hangers and has for its main object to improve upon the construction of devices of this character to such an extent as to provide a very simple and inexpensive article which will effectively support a number of coats or the like, and one or more pairs of trousers, provision being made whereby the latter are effectively stretched to retain the creases therein.
In carrying out the above object, a coat hanger and a trousers stretcher are provided and affurther object of the invention becomes to pivotally connect the two, whereby the stretching device which in the present case is-foldable, may be swung upwardly into the space between the arms of the hanger, when said stretcher is folded.
lVith the above and minor objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed and shown-in the drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing its application-to use; Fig. 2'
is a similar view with the foldable trousers stretcher in folded position, preparatory to swinging it upwardly; Fig. 3 is still another side elevation showing the trousers stretcher folded and swung upwardly between the arms of the coat hanger; Fig. t is a horizontal section as seen on the line 4.& of Fig. 1, showing more particularly the construction of the upper clamp; Fig. 5 is a similar view as seenalong the plane of the line 55 of Fig. 1, showing more particularly the structure of the lower clamp; Figs. 6 and 7 aredetail vertical transverse sections taken respectively on the lines 66 and 77 of Fig. l; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the coat hanger showing more particularly its construction and the arrangement of a pair of bearing plates on its opposite ends.
In these drawings, constituting a part of this application, the numeral 1. designates an arched coat hanger which is formed of, a single piece of comparatively stifl wire hav ing-its central portion bentto form aninclined loop 2, the end portions of said wire being then inclined downwardly in opposite directions, as seen at 3, and bent down- \vardlyv as at 4;, said downwardly'bent portions being bent upwardly. substantially upon themselvesiand. then continued in- I wardly to the loop as seen at 5, at which point they are bent around said; loop as clearly shown. In most cases a hook 6 is provided for suspending the hanger. By referenceto the various figures of the drawings, it will be s'een'that the portions 3 of the hanger are joined to the uppermost portion of the loop 2 and that said portions 3 lie in planes above the ends 5, which latter are secured to the lowermost part of the loop. Bythis construction,the. hanger is adapted more readily to the formation'of an ordinary coat or vest; I Y
Spanning the looped ends of the hanger 1,
isa pair of'bearing plates 10, these plates being here shown as having their ends bent around the loops, whereby they are elfectively held in fixed relation to the hanger 1. Interposed between the two plates 10 is an upper trousers clamp 11 which comprises a relatively fixed horizontal bar12 having its opposite ends bent laterally as seen'at 13 and at 13, pivot studs 14 being passed through these laterally bent ends and through the plates 10. The'laterally bent end 13 is integrally joined to a movable clamping arm 15 preferably having. its terminal deflected outwardly as shown, this bar 15 lying parallel to the bar 12. Adapted for co-action with the outwardly curved end of the bar 15 is a link 16, this link being supported by the terminal of the laterally bent end 13, which end is bent to form an upright loop for 1, in which position the band at the upper end of the trousers is secured in the uppermost clamp 11 while the lower ends of the trousers legs are clamped within the lowermost clamp 11', the lazy-tong structure being then extended, in which position it may be retained by the provision of any appropriate form of fastening such for instance as the hook 25 shown at the upper end thereof. By thus clamping the trousers within the device, all wrinkles willbe re moved from the same and the creases will be retained therein. It will be understood that a vest and coat may also be supported upon the hanger 1 while the trousers are held by the stretching device.
lVhen the stretching device is no longer needed, it is first folded to the position seen in Fig. 2 after which it may be swungupwardly between the arms of the hanger as seen in Fig. 3, thus providing a very compact article which may easily be packed for traveling.
Although any appropriate form of clamp would suffice at the top and bottom of the stretching device, the clamps shown in the drawings are preferably provided, as seen more particularly-in Figs. 6 and 7, the two bars of the upper clamp diverge downwardly or transversely to their lengths, while the two bars of the lowermost clamp diverge upwardly. By this structure, gripping edges are provided which latter more effectively prevent the clamps from being accidentally removed from the trousers.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a very simple article has been provided for carrying out the objects of the invention, yet that such an article, although simple, will be very effective in operation.
I claim The combination with an arched support, of a garment clamp between the lower ends of the arms thereof, said clamp being formed of a single strip of resilient metal bent upon itself between its ends to form a pair of parallel clamping bars and an open loop connecting the same, the free end of one of said bars being bent upon itself to provide an additional loop, axially alined pivot studs passing through the two loops, transverse attaching plates secured tothe arms of the support and receiving said studs, and fastening means for normally retaining the two clamping bars in close proximity.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM EDXVARD PUGSLEY. lVitnesses CORNELIUS DE BOER, J. G. KINGENGA.
