clear, andexact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to racks for sup orting garments, &c., and is particularly a apted for use as a display-rack.
The object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, durable, compact, and attractive device formed of few parts and which is provided with garment-engaging bars of peculiar construction adapted to be firmly gripped upon a garment and hold it in proper position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a bracket adapted to be secured to a wall or other structure in any suitable manner, and pivotally connected to this bracket is a series of garment-support- These may be of various forms; but my preferred construction of support consists of. a forked bar having flared ends to permit of the ready insertion of the garment between the spring-tines of said forked member.
The invention also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is
a perspective view of a rack constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan. View of the bracket with the bars detached. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said bracket, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of bar, the central portion of said bar being removed.
Referring to the drawingsby numerals, the bracket comprises a horizontal plate1,which is preferably segmental in shape, said plate 1 having oppositely-extendin 'right-angled back plates 2 thereon, provi ed, preferably, with apertures 3 for the reception of screws or other securing devices. It will be noted that the plates 2 constitute a substantially circular back which extends an equal distanc'e upon opposite sides of the horizontal plate 1. The upper one of the vertical back plates is preferably constructed with a hook 4, whereby the entire bracket can be hung from a nail orother like device. The plate 1 may be of any suitable contour and has openings 5through the ends thereof for the reception of securing devices. Other apertures 6 extend through the plate at points adjacent the forward edge thereof and are adapted to receive the ends of garm nt-supporting bars. These bars may be of different formation, as shown in Fig. 1, and in said-figure I have shown three different kinds of bars in use.
One of these bars consists of a shank 7, having a hook 8 at one end, while the stem 9 is arranged at its other end at right angles to its shank. This stem projects downwardly into one of the apertures 6 and forms a ivotal connection for the shank. Another orm of bar shown in connection with this bracket consists of a curved rod 10, having a head 11 at its free end, while a stem 12 is formed at its other end and is rotatably mounted in one of the apertures 6 and forms a pivotal connection between the rod 10 and the bracket.
This rod is preferably provided with ahook 13 at a point intermediate its ends, which can be utilized for suspending any suitable articles. The preferred form of bar 14. used in connection with the rack is one which I utilize for clamping upon skirts, trousers, &c.. for supporting them from the bracket. This bar 14 consists of a shank 14, having a stem 15 extending at right angles thereto at oneend and adapted to be rotatably mounted within one of the apertures 6. Projecting from this shank are converging tines 16, formed of spring metal and having their free ends flared in opposite directions, as at 17, from the point where said tines are closest together. By employin these flared ends a garment can be inserts between them and will cause the tines to spring apart while said garment is being brought into position within the bar. It will of course be understood that the tines will exert a constant pressure upon the garment throu hout their lengths, and will therefore securel y hold said garment in proper position in the bar. A bar. of this character is particularly adapted for engaging the ends of trouser-legs or for clamping on skirt-bands.
While the bars employed are preferably formed of smooth unbroken surfaces, I can, if desired, construct each of the tines in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4, and which is an enlarged View of the bar 14*. (Shown in no Fig. 1.) By referring to said figure it will be seen that one of the tines 18 has a longitudinally-extending bead 19 formed on its inner surface and directly opposite a longitudinallyextending groove 20 formed in the other tine 21, said bead 19 and groove 20 con stituting gripping means. By utilizing a forked bar, such as herein described, the same tends not only to clamp upon a garment, but the bead also causes the garment to be forced into the groove 20, and a stronger hold upon the material is thus obtained. The hooked bar 7, herein described, may be utilized for any urpose, such as supporting coats, &c., and the bar 10 can be employed as a hat-rack. v
Any preferred number of bars can be used in connection with the bracket and all of the bars can be alike, or a suitable number of each kind may be employed. It is intended to place these bars upon the market as articles of manufacture, and while they are referably designed for use in connection with the articular form of bracket herein described it will of course be understood that they can be positioned upon any bracket which is capable of supporting them in a horizontal position and permitting them to be swung laterally upon their stems.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent, is- 4 In a device of the class described, the combination of a bracket, comprising a horizontall apertured plate, said plate provided wit integral upper and lower right-angled extensions, a hook formed integrally upon said upper extension, 2. garment-supporting bar'carried by said horizontal plate, said bar comprising a shank provided with a rightangled integral stem, spring-tines integral with said shank, one of. said tines having a longitudinally-extending bead thereon, and the other tine provided with a longitudinal groove, said stem positioned within the aperture of the horizontal plate of said bracket, and an auxiliary garment-supporting bar carried by said horizontal plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
