HARE/EN E. BAILEY, OF SMITET RIVER, Gil.
GARMENT-HANGER.
ise ase.
Application filed May 20, 1914.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, WARREN E. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States residing at Smith .River, in the county of Del Norte and State of Galifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers and more particularly to hangers upon which garments are to be hung, or displayed for storage or other purposes, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a garment hanger whereby a ladys coat and skirt may be suspended at one time or a gentlemans coat and trousers may be suspended therefrom.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of garment hanger of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, 1 a supporting bar 1, which is preferably arcuate in form, as illustrated and may be constructed of wood, metal or any other desirable material and the outer ends thereof are cut-away to provide not only for the supporting of the material but for the provision of a tapering end adapted to be in serted into the upper end of the coat sleeve. The supporting bar 1 is provided with a longitudinal central opening 2 which is provide Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably elongated in form and extending transversely across this opening, at the lower edge thereof, is a stop pin 8, the pur pose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Movably mounted within the opening 2, are the side portions of the U-shaped members extending transversely through the bars and retained therein by being headed, as shown at 6. The intermediate portions of the clamping bars are arranged in parallel relation and bear each other so that when the side portions are drawn up through the opening, it will bring the clamping members 5 tightly together so as to securely clamp the garment placed therebetween. From this it will be apparent that when the intermediate portions of the U-shaped members t are suspended from a hoolr or the like, and the coat or other garment suspended from the supporting bar 1, the weight of the garments pulling downwardly upon the U-shaped members will tend to clamp the bars 5 tightly to any garment placed therebetween.
in the accompanying drawing, 1 have illustrated a device constructed for use as a coat and trousers hanger and, in this form of the invention, it will be understood that the clamping bars 5 are somewhat shorter in length than when used as a skirt hanger and it will be obvious that these clamping bars 5 may be formed of any length desired and of any weight. It will be understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the illustration, that the same form of device is used as a coat and skirt hanger as is used for coat and trousers hanger, the only difference being the length of the clamping bars 5. It will also be apparent from the foregoing that l have provided a simple and durable device whereby two or more garments may be readily suspended for display, storage or other purposes and that the device is extremely simple in its construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what It claim is 1. A device of the class described including an arcuate supporting bar having a central elongated opening therein, a transverse stop pin arranged along the lower edge of the opening, U-shaped members having their side portions movable in said opening, co-aoting clamping bars carried by the free ends of said U-shaped members, whereby when the said members are pulled upwardly through the opening, said bars will be tightly clamped together.
2. A. device of the class described includ- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ing an arcuate supporting bar having an elongated opening formed in the central portion thereof, a transverse stop pin arranged across the lower side of said opening, U-shaped members having their side portions movably mounted within said opening, parallel clamping bars suspended from the ends of said U-shaped members, said U-shaped members being movable outwardly through said opening, whereby to clamp said bars tightly together when a garment or other article is mounted upon the supporting bar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. WARREN E. BAILEY. Witnesses:
