NITED STATES PATENT 'rricn.
GEORGE XV. HUBER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT H ANGER AND STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,476, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed June 24, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE WASHINGTON HUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Garment Hanging and Stretching Device, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for hanging and stretching garments,
particularly trousers, coats, &c., and has for its object an appliance which is very compact, taking up but little space, from which various garments may be suspended under conditions which will allow their folds and creases to be taken out of them by the mere weight of the garments themselves.
The drawing represents a side elevation of one form of the complete device, showing the same fixed in a wall-bracket by socket connection, said socket being either fast or'free to swing from side to side by pivot-hinge.
My invention consists, preferably, of a strong wire rod bent back upon itself to form the two parallel sides a and b, with sufficient space between them to receive and hold between them the folded ends of trousers or other garment inserted therein, the body of said garment hanging downward therefrom.
The ends of said rod are preferably fastened in a socket, which socket may be made fast' to a base or wall bracket, or held thereon by pin or hinge to enable the device to be swung from side to side. The loops formed by bending the said wire rod are themselves bent upward at an angle to the body of the device to form heads or hooks, upon which may be hung coats, vests, hats, or the like. The form of the said loop is shown as that of a V with the two points 0 and d, the object being that both of them shall be used as garment-hooks. The trousers may be folded and inserted between the rods a and I), while the coat may be hung on c and the vest on d, and the complete suit in this manner provided for.
An essential feature of my form of con- Serial No. 596,700. (No model.)
struction is the loop formed by bending said wire rod back upon itself. This loop is so shaped that it may be constituted and act as a spring to give tension to the parallel rods a b h t, &c., forming the sides of the jaws or clamps of the said device. Said springloop permits said parallel rods being spread or opened sufficiently to allow the folded bottoms or ends of the trousers to be inserted therein, which when done the rods return to their normal position and act as a clamp upon said trousers ends. To increase the strength of said spring-loops, as well as to provide 1 hooks or points 0, cl, and f, upon which garments may be hung, said spring-loop may be shaped into the form of a V.
I am aware that devices of this character are in use and have been patented having springs, clamps, jaws, yokes, and hooks as essential features. None of these constructions do I wish to claim, broadly; but,
Having now described my device and the purpose for which it is intended, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1-. The within-described article for hanging and stretching garments consisting of a single wire bent backward on itself for resiliency, and the support to which the ends of the said wire are attached, the parallel parts of the said wire being clamps controlled by such resiliency, the wire between said parts being turned upward from the main body of the device and additionally bent to increase the spring action substantially as set forth.
2. A garment hanger and stretcher consisting of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form two parallel clamping-jaws secured at one end to a suitable support and at the other end bent upward and downward to form alternating projections or bent parts 0 d e substantially as set forth.
, GEORGE W. HUBER.
